ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Maldives inked on Thursday four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met Maldives President Abdullah Yamin Abdul Qayyum
The four MoUs included cooperation on sports, health, education, and narcotics, and are said to help in further consolidating bilateral relations between the two countries.
Speaking to the media after his meeting with the Prime Minister Maldives President Abdullah Yamin Abdul Qayyum said Pakistan has always proven to a be a loyal friend to Maldives.
“Time and time again Pakistan has proven itself to a be a loyal friend to Maldives,” Qayyum said.

Reiterating the Maldivian president’s stance, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said, “Pakistan attaches high importance to its relations with the Maldives. Our relations are characterized by cordiality, mutual respect and commonality of interest.”
The premier said that President Qayyum’s visit is an important milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries.
“Pakistan is aware of Maldives’ concerns on climate and environmental issues and is willing to cooperate on these issues bilaterally with Maldives as well as under the ambit of SAARC,” PM Nawaz said.

The prime minister said Pakistan and Maldives must continue to closely coordinate their positions on the platform of SAARC with an aim to make it a model of regional cooperation, based on the principles of sovereign equality.
The premier said bilateral trade between the two countries is below the true potential and emphasized that steps should be taken to increase it.
