Fashion Police: Miss Nobody!

Actor-model Queenie Singh Dhody left us gawking in shock, when she made an appearance at Anu and Sunny Dewan’s Christmas bash. The star not only failed to impress us, she actually left us trembling in repugnance.

HAIR

Although it seems like Dhody put a lot of effort in her hair do, it was not exactly what we would call a perfect hair do. Despite the beautiful blow-dried look in her lower hair, the oily strands of hair brushing her forehead (or so it appeared) took away the lovely effect.

MAKE-UP

Her make-up was a tad bit over the top. The gold and beige eye shimmer was not blended in well and the broad black eyeliner made her eyes look droopy. Though pink lip shade was the colour of the year, here it looks just weird.

ACCESSORIES

The Bollywood star went the extra mile to accessorise her already over the top dress. The shimmery, gold, dangling earrings along with matching neck pieces were screaming out loud. And that was not all. Dhody chose a matching beige clutch to go with the dress.

OUTFIT

Dhody sported a Surily Goel outfit for the event. The champagne coloured mini dress with Aztec design was a terrible choice not only for the party but to keep in your wardrobe too. All that shimmer in the dress along with the shiny accessories and pink lip shade gave us an eye sore.

SHOES

She completed her exaggerated look with a pair of matching glittery suede pumps. We love the pumps but not in this look. However, these shoes will do wonders with a less blinged out dress, we assure you that.

Wore it better!

f2

American film actor Hilary Swank was spotted at the Pamella Roland presentation in a sparkling beige mini dress with her hair falling in waves over her shoulder. She went for neutral make-up and no accessories at all. Her sky-high YSL platform sandals left us drooling. Nice way to put it together!

f1

Here, the country singer Taylor Swift walked the American Music Awards red carpet in this pretty beige and gold Zuhair Murad mini-dress. Taylor tied her hair in a bun and went for dark eyes and nude lips — perfect combo with a glittery outfit. She painted her nails red and went for a pair of gold stud earrings, which were her only accessory. She completed her look with nude, strappy sandals.

f4

We love this shimmery look; and that is because this model went for subtle make-up and no accessories with this one-shoulder, fully sequined, gold mini dress. We love the way she left her hair open followed by kohled eyes and nude pout. She did not opt for any accessories and completed her look with golden, strappy sandals.

British Indian singer-actor Sophie Choudhry was spotted at two Mumbai events in the last few weeks of December looking fashionably on cue. She ranks high on our style-o-meter for successfully pulling off experimental looks.

Sophie Choudhry

image 02

Hair & Make-up

At Sunny and Anu Dewan’s Christmas party, Sophie went for a flirty, feminine look. Her beautiful dark tresses were blow dried with bouncy curls. She lined her eyes with the right amount of kohl, and smudged it to get that smoldering hot effect. Generous amounts of mascara did the trick, leaving her brown eyes bright. Bright pink lips and a peach tint on the cheeks topped off the perfect look for a fun night out.

Clothes

This gorgeous black and white textured dress accentuates Sophie’s curves. The capped sleeves and deep V neckline are super sexy.

Accessories & Shoes

A black Bottega clutch and skyscraping Christian Louboutins are the perfect items to complement this short number. A chunky ring and black leather watch are also tasteful and simple accessories.

image 01

Hair & Make-up

At the Dabangg2 premier, Sophie kept her brown hair to the side in tightly held curls. Her make-up was fresh, with lots of mascara and a coral pout that brought colour to her monotone look.

Clothes

Sophie stayed stylish and comfortable at the movie night in a gold glitter top by Vivienne Westwood, which she paired with black Rag & Bone pants.

Accessories & Shoes

A Jimmy Choo candy clutch, a watch and YSL Tributes were her choice of accessories. The black strappy heels added some inches to her height and looked good paired with those pants. A premiere-perfect 10 for Sophie!

Whether it’s a book launch, a music release or social services, the B-town divas are always up to something. Here, we bring a round-up of some of the hottest Bollywood celebs who were spotted at different events during Christmas and New Year holidays.

Prachi Desai

The pretty Bollywood actor was seen grooving at a dance rehearsal for New Year eve’s programme in this angelic avatar. Prachi wore a little-below-the-knee, white dress with beige ribbons and flowy hem.

The young star parted her sleek, long hair to the side. She kept her make-up neutral with lots of mascara accentuating her brown pupils, and coral pout lighting up her face against the white dress. The actor accessorised her look with black diamond-shaped, stud earrings and dark green peep-toes.

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena

Kareena Kapoor dressed up traditionally, befitting the image of Begum of Nawab of Pataudi, at the launch of Richa Lakhera’s book Garbage Beat in Mumbai. The royalty was clad in a nude-coloured, long-sleeved Shehla Khan’s anarkali dress.

Kareena paired up her ankle length embellished georgette anarkali top with matching silk churidaar and a flowing embroidered dupatta. Golden Jimmy Choo heels and Aquamarine chandelier earrings were her only accessories. The actor dropped jaws with her left loose, side swept hair and pink hue makeup with bold kohled eyes.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam

The fashionista Sonam Kapoor sizzled at the Filmfare Awards press conference in Bangalore. She endorsed a mint green Shehla Khan sari with black sequin border, paired with a matching quarter-sleeved blouse. She walked with confidence in her elegant up-do, perfect for her ravishing look.

While Sonam balanced her make-up well with a neutral-colour shimmer on her eyes and pink highlighter, we loved the bright red pout. Her accessories included matching dangling earrings, a wrist watch and a black potli bag.

Nushrat Bharucha

Nushrat

Bollywood actor Nushrat Bharucha was spotted wearing a plain black evening dress at the music launch of her upcoming film Akaash Vani. The starlet went for a cute, bubbly look with loosely curled hair.

Her rosy pink make-up and red nail paint complemented the black colour of her outfit. She finished off her look with a white stone neck piece, which was her only accessory matching her white sandals. Two thumbs up for her!

Genelia D’souza

Genelia

Bollywood sweetheart, who married Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh in 2012, was seen grinning ear-to-ear at the special screening of her husband’s debut production film Balak Palak.

Genelia went casual for the event, wearing a white top over a black jacket and blue jeans, paired with black boots. We love her short hair with red highlights; this hair style gives her a livelier look. The starlet went for neutral make-up, with black eyeliner and nude lip shade doing wonders on her. She accessorised her look with a black wrist watch, rings on each hand and silver bracelets.

Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi

The rising star of 2012 Sonakshi Sinha was spotted at Smile Foundation NGO, showing her humanitarian side. She was wearing a blue and white striped blouse over blue trousers. Sadly, Sonakshi failed to impress us.

With her middle-parted hair hanging loose over her shoulder, Sonakshi was looking plain old boring. However, she added a little colour to her appearance with her dark kohled eyes, pink lip shade; we can say that was all that saved her. Silver stud earrings were her only accessory along with silver, beaded, transparent pumps.

Silhouettes and gowns with a Mughal touch

KARACHI:

Tabassum Mughal is a self-trained designer who believes in neat cuts, elegant silhouettes and unique styles.

With an “insatiable curiosity and thirst for art”, this aspiring young designer has built herself a long list of loyal clients over the years. She may have started designing clothes casually for friends and family but is now in the game for the long haul; she has spread her wings not just in Pakistan but in the international arena as well — UK, USA, UAE and Norway.

“Everyone is unique and being able to understand each person’s individual style and what they can carry off with elegance, is key for any designer,” says Mughal, whose done her bachelors in business administration and also holds a diploma in fashion design. “I believe everyone should wear something that complements their personality and figure and not wear it just because it’s ‘in fashion’.” She feels it’s crucial for people to invest in clothes that actually suit them.

Although it started off as more of a hobby, Mughal has been designing clothes ever since she can remember. “I started designing clothes for my friends and family years before I actually took this up as a serious profession,” she reminisces. “Everyone would love my creations and this ultimately helped me realise and discover my talent.” She started her label Tabassum Mughal Haute Couture in 2009, where she showcased her collections at a personal boutique in her backyard.

With her eccentric style, Mughal is always on the quest for something new. After receiving numerous requests from her clients based in the Middle East, Mughal finally decided to take the leap into the line of trendy abayas. “I have created many collections from eastern to western wear, casual to formal and bridal trousseaus to fusion and merging of styles,” she says. “My upcoming collection, Aswad by Tabassum Mughal, however, is a rather unique one.”

This line has specifically been designed for her clients in UAE; those interested in wearing elegantly embellished abayas with hand-picked stones, crystals and other ornaments to make them stand out in a crowd. Another upcoming collection is R2W which will include ready-to-wear casuals, office and party wear.

Tabassum Mughal

“Anything can inspire me — be it a piece of architecture, a certain scenery or image, an interesting piece of jewellery or even different cultures,” she says about what inspires her to create her magic on fabrics. For several years, Mughal has also been showcasing her collections to the world through Pakistan Fashion Week. “When we are inspired and motivated to do something, we need to flaunt it in front of the world,” she laughs. “Our high-end creations, our creativity and our distinctive styles need to be showcased.”

Despite being in the industry for merely four years, Mughal doesn’t feel threatened by her competitors. “I don’t see my competition as real competition because my standing and style of work is very different from other designers,” she says, confident with her achievements so far. “Our fashion industry has evolved remarkably and has made its place in the international market. And for that, I feel very proud.” She feels designers such as Maheen Khan, Sana Safinaz, HSY and Rizwan Beyg are names people will remember for years to come due to their contributions to fashion.

No job comes without hardships and Mughal feels challenges designers face on a daily basis can also be traced down to a number of significant issues: power outages, rising costs, training labour, labour turnover and the ability to believe in yourself. “Obtaining well-trained workers as well as preventing them from running off to my competitors, was one of the initial obstacles I faced,” she says, adding that she is still figuring out how this matter will ever be resolved. “Believing in yourself and in what you are doing and the assertiveness to deliver are also essentials as this industry is very competitive.” She feels you need to be prepared for everything and giving an edge to your work is one way you can rise above your rivals.

“Currently, the label is catering to a niche but has future plans to expand itself and become available to the masses as fashion is ultimately for everyone,” she says. She also feels that having a natural talent and inbuilt passion for fashion is crucial to this business — you either have it or you don’t.

Actor/style icon Malaika Aurora Khan was spotted in this gorgeous white and canary yellow Shehla Khan dress.

Complementing her outfit and her fabulous look were ruby and diamond chandelier earrings, a diamond bracelet, gold peep toe shoes and a gold clutch. Her make-up was glossy and natural with her lovely locks falling over her shoulder — we are in love!

Hair

Malaika is sporting side bangs and has her beautiful waist length chocolate brown glossy hair swept to the side. To achieve a similar look, blow dry your hair, sweep your bangs to the side and load it up with some shine product and throw it over your shoulder. If you have shorter hair, pin it up with some pretty hair clips available at your local stores.

This or that?: Sonakshi Sinha

Bollywood actor Sonakshi Sinha, who made her debut in 2012 alongside Salman Khan, has earned recognition and acclaim as an actor. The star showed up along with the cast of Dabangg2 at Cafe Coffee Day’s (CCD) launch of new flavours in a casual avatar. On the other hand, she decided to opt for a classy look at the Mumbai premiere of Dabangg2. Let’s evaluate which look was better — this or that!

new

Hair and make-up

Sonakshi looked ravishing at the Mumbai premiere of Dabangg2. She opted for a low ponytail with her mane falling over one shoulder. Her eyes were dark and kohl-lined with lots of mascara, she had a hint of bronze highlight on her cheekbones, a nude pout and pink nail polish. The make-up certainly did wonders for this beauty.

Outfit

The B-town diva looks gorgeous in this black anarkali with neon pink accents by design duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. She carried it well and we love this look on her. Thumbs up for Sonakshi!

Accessories and shoes

With silver and black dangling earrings, a silver ring on one hand and a matching black clutch, Sonakshi accessorised her look perfectly. She finished it off with a pair of glittery black pumps, which added just the right amount of sparkle to her look. Way to go girl!

2

Hair and make-up

Sonakshi woke up and just drove to the promotion without bothering to put much effort in her look. She left her dark, long, thin tresses loose, which made her face look chubby. She went for neutral make-up — which we love — with a tint of blush and rosy pink lips.

Outfit

While some actors know how to flaunt a casual look in a classy way, Sonakshi is definitely not one of them. The 25-year-old starlet looked plain old boring in this casual attire. She sported a floral-print top with a pair of blue denims and a white asymmetrical shrug.

Accessories and shoes

Her accessories included a pair of black Armani shades and silver stud earrings. If only she would have gone for some funky accessories, she would have gotten a higher score on our style-o-meter. However, we love her silver, sequined ballet flats.

Beauty regiments for dry winters

$

KARACHI:

Winter’s here and everything is dry and parched. This time of the year can  prove deadly for you hair, skin, lips and nails and thus you need to take extra care. Here are a few tips on how to keep yourself and your skin looking soft and velvety smooth!

Winter hair

The over-use of a chemical called sulfate, which is present in shampoos, results in your hair becoming dry as well as breaking off and falling. Try not to wash your hair every day and in case you have an oily scalp, invest in a dry shampoo — it works wonders! Sometimes, winter causes dryness to your scalp which results in dandruff. So make sure you oil your hair at least once a week to prevent any signs of dandruff — crush a little tablet of vitamin E (oil) and rub it on the tips to attain softer hair.

If you hair is still flaky, try an anti-dandruff shampoo. However, keep in mind that most contain zinc and such shampoos end up pulling out the moisture from your hair. The trick to well-nourished hair is vitamins. Cutting down on carbohydrates causes hair loss so keep a balanced diet and if you can’t, then take some vitamins to cure those deficiencies.

Static hair, on the other hand, is the result when your hair picks up an electrical charge from dry air around you. To avoid this problem, which is very common in this season, switch to a more hydrating shampoo and conditioner. An alternative solution is to use anti-frizz serum or simply apply a leave-in conditioning spray.

Skincare

Skin becomes extremely itchy, dry and just horrible in winter. Adding a few drops of olive oil in water and bathing in it helps lock moisture in your skin. Massaging baby oil over your body before jumping in the shower also helps and so does the essential process of moisturising post-showering, which is something that seems to be neglected by most people.

makup 01

Keep a balanced diet and if you can’t, take some vitamins to cure those deficiencies. PHOTO: FILE

For extra dry skin, application of cocoa or shea butter does wonders; it is available at The Body Shop for Rs 1,690. For cheaper yet equally satisfying results, opt for Nivea or Dove body lotions and moisturisers which are easily available at local stores throughout the country. Usage of a good moisturiser for your face is equally important — Olay Total Effects works best for me, but everyone’s skin is different, so find one which suits your skin’s needs.

Lip care

If your lips are not chapped in this utterly dry weather, you must be super woman! Applying chapsticks and lip balms regularly helps restore moisture in your lips — Labello is one that works best for me and is available at stores such as Ami’s and Aghas. One important thing, which is always forgotten, is that keeping yourself hydrated in winter is key. Because of the cold, people find themselves drinking less water, which is wrong — keep a check on your water consumption!

Nails

There’s never a better time to pamper yourself and get a mani-pedi at your favourite spa with your best bud or mom! With a variety of options and products available at spas and salons, you can now take your pick. The newest product in the market is Thalgo which has specifically been designed for dry winter skin. But for me, nothing beats OPI pedicures!

Get The Look: Geometric Jazz

Bollywood actor Hazel Keech was spotted at the premier of the film Dabangg 2 in a casual yet funky do. She made a style statement by breaking the symmetry of her top with an eclectic combination of hipster spectacles and stone washed grey jeans. Here’s how you can copy her balancing act.

f5

Hair

Mahogany coloured hair is always chic especially if let loose as this diva does. We would have preferred some volume to that crown though. To achieve a look like this, tease your hair at the crown and let your bangs fall side-ways, let the rest of it fall casually. Add some shine product to your hair, we recommend Loreal’s Nutri Gloss (Rs990).

f3

Make-up

With a lady danger pout and kohl lined eyes, Hazel keeps the look casual yet striking. You can find Hashmi Kohl at your local stores (Rs150) and Mac’s Lady Danger (Rs1,700).

f4

Accessories

Our local markets make these earrings by the dozen, so look for them at your local stores (Rs250) or check out stores like Saffron or Accesorize. For glasses like hers check out copies of Rayban’s at Urban eye (Rs1,200).

f2

Outfit

Look for a pair of grey stone washed jeans at stores like Levi’s or Stoneage (Rs3,000), a geometric top at stores like Debenhams, Crossroads or your local stores for a funky print, prices may vary. A jacket of this style with the 80’s shoulders should be available at Mango or Debenhams (Rs4,000).

f1

Shoes

These dainty shoes in black are popular at stores like Marie Claire, Charles and Keith and Vincci, prices may range from Rs2,000-4,000.

Hollywood actor and former fashion model Wendie Malick made an appearance at the Hallmark Channel’s Press Gala looking like, well, this. She hoped for a sophisticated business-woman look, which unfortunately was an epic failure.

The Charge Sheet

Hair

Wendie opted for a boring hair-do. With her short, straight, sleek hair, she could have done so much more. But this open side swept look with bangs brushing her forehead is something that fails to excite us.

Accessories

Accessorising the look with a wrist watch, some bracelets and a silver ring paired with a black clutch was a smart choice. However, we think different coloured bracelets don’t compliment  her otherwise mature look. Makeup The 62-year-old actor went for neutral make-up with lots of mascara on her lids, bronze highlighter and a nude pout. We wish Wendie had opted for a brighter lip shade!

Shoes

Wendie finished off the look with a pair of flat, black pumps which were not a bad choice. Nevertheless, if she would have opted for some heels, it would have added some length to her look.

Outfit

The Hollywood star sported a black suit  over a white dress shirt paired with a loosely worn maroon and white striped tie. Unfortunately, the attire was too confused. Maybe if her coat was a tad bit shorter and more like a suit jacket, she would have pulled it off nicely.

Wear it like

Blake Lively

Blake Lively

This young Hollywood chic Blake Lively rocked this androgynous look. Sporting a sharp satin suit and white shirt, Blake looked drop-dead gorgeous. Flaunting her blonde curls in an open hair do, Blake highlighted her eyes with lots of mascara, some pink blush and a rosy pout. She went for minimal accessories with a ring on her right hand. Black heels garnished her look well.

Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz

Spanish actor Penelope Cruz looked stunning at the International Rome Film Festival. Styled in a chic and slim fitted black suit, Penelope went for smokey eyes and coral lips that complemented  her mature look well. Her tousled mahogany tresses were falling over her shoulder with bangs brushing her forehead. With no accessories at all and black pumps, the starlet was a pleasant sight for sore eyes.

Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton

The Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine aka Kate Middleton endorsed a Reiss Angel coat on her visit to the St George’s Park. The beauty looked ravishing with her mahogany locks falling loosely over her shoulder and her neutral make-up doing wonders for her. With silver dangling earrings and a black clutch as accessories and knee-length, high-heel boots completing the look, Kate had us drooling.

The recently held Zee Cine Awards saw well-heeled stars walking the red carpet in Mumbai. The Express Tribune brings you a round-up of those who dressed to impress and earned a 10 and those who failed and tanked.

Deepika Padukone

Coming in first is actor Deepika Padukone. This desi diva exuded ethereal grace on the red carpet. Her snow white gown by Indian designer Naeem Khan, beautiful bronze shoulder blades, bronzed skin and gorgeous pout, earn her the top spot on our list.

Esha Gupta

Esha Gupta

Runner up Esha Gupta looks smashing in this beautiful Dior gown. From her debut in Raaz 3, this glamazon is knocking on all the doors to success. We love her up-do and minimalist accessories.

Mugdha Godse

Mugdha Godse

Ranking third on our list is actor Mugdha Godse. We absolutely adore the delicate flower detailing on her fabulous indigo blue gown. Godse has definitely got a brilliant stylist because she’s been spotted with some killer looks these past few months. Her yummy bronze skin complements the colour well too as she stands confident and tall for her photo.

Sophie Chaudhary

Sophie Chaudhary

Actor Sophie walked in wearing a Falguni and Shane blue peacock gown. With a beaded belt complementing her voluptuous frame, Sophie charmed the red carpet with her dreamy eyes and million dollar smile.

Payal Rohatgi

Payal Rohatgi

Failing to impress is actor Payal who has gone seriously wrong with her Riyaz Gangji outfit. Forget the dress, her hair and make-up struck the wrong chord as well. Velvet, net, embroidery and gota can’t be a good mix when paired like that!

Genelia D’Souza

Genelia D’Souza

Let’s call her puffy the vampire slayer. What was she thinking with that unflattering Neeta Lulla dress? The fringe is unkempt and unbecoming on her, and the lack of make-up is just a mystery. Thumbs down!

With her beautiful physique and lovely face, Bollywood bombshell Anushka Sharma did not take long to make a mark in the Indian film industry. While Anushka is usually seen in boyish, casual clothing, we sometimes find her looking flirty and feminine in traditional outfits too. She was recently spotted in casual attire at the press meet of her upcoming film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola; where as she went for a traditional look on the sets of reality TV show Nach Baliye 5. Let’s evaluate which look she got right.

Anushka Sharma

model 02

Hair & Make-up

Anushka opted for a casual, loose braid with strands of hair falling out to create a soft look. Her dark kohled eyes, a fresh pink on her cheeks coupled with a pink pout made her face look young and vibrant. We wish she had done something funkier with the hair — a fish tail braid maybe?

Clothes

Anushka sported a plain blue georgette top over white leopard-printed tights and paired it with a black jacket. Anushka scores a six on 10 for this look. We think a fun, structured jacket would have been much better than this boring black one she has on.

Accessories & Shoes

The starlet chose to go without accessories, which was an inappropriate choice. Some fun accessories would have helped elevate this almost shabby look. She finished off her look with a pair of grey wrap shoes.

model 01

Hair & Make-up

She tied her hair in a loose braid, which went well with her traditional outfit. With dark eyes, pink blush and a pink lip shade, Anushka looked as ravishing as ever. We love her make-up. Two thumbs up for getting it right!

Clothes

The young beauty mesmerised us in this Indian ensemble. Anushka opted for a yellow crinkle ghaghra and a heavily embellished black choli, paired with a pink and yellow dupatta with gota trimming. We give her full 10 for this lovely colour combination.

Accessories & Shoes

The Indian diva accessorised well with golden and pink dangling earrings and matching bangles. She went for a pair of pink and golden khussas to complete the look. Anushka had us drooling with this colourful number!

Karisma Kapoor was seen in this fun get-up at Anu and Sunny Dewan’s Christmas bash. We love everything she pulls out of her wardrobe and totally adore her sense of style. Here are a few tips on how to get her look:

Make Up

mackup

Karisma has got basic smokey eyes, bronzer and nude lips going for her. We recommend using Color Studio’s Carbon Black eye ink (Rs550), Hashmi kohl (Rs150), Maybelline Collosal Volume Express mascara (Rs1,000) and Mac’s Hug me (Rs1,700). Maybelline’s Dream mousse bronzer (Rs1,050) is also a good option for those who want to achieve a sun-kissed look. Apply the eye shadow over your lids, blending it well and use the kohl on the inner lids of your eyes. Finish them off with a good amount of mascara. Paint your nails in OPI’s Moonraker grey or look for a cheaper local brand of grey nail polish.

Outfit

dress

Dressed in all black, Karisma is bringing sexy back! Pair up slim fitted black pants with a black sequinned top. Check out stores like Mantra for the top (Rs3,000) and Stone Age or Outfitters for a similar pair of pants (Rs1,200).

Shoes

shoe

Strappy black wedge sandals do the trick! Look for a similar pair at Marie Claire, Vincci or Charles and Keith (Rs2,000 to 4,000).

Hair

hair

Karisma left her hair simple and falling over her shoulders. To achieve a look like this, straighten your hair if it’s curly, tease it at the crown to get some volume. For a nicer touch, use a shine product like Loreal’s Nutri Gloss (Rs990) or Garnier’s Anti-Frizz Sleek and Shine serum (Rs1,500).

Accessories

The accessories are perfect for the outfit; wear a sling over chain side bag over your top. Pair a black leather strap watch with some leather wristbands for a rocker chic look; check your local stores for these.

Trend File with Secret Closet: Cutwork & applique crafts

Although it is still too early to predict the new trends or rather innovative techniques that 2013 will bring. We get closer to the first of many fashion weeks to come, one thing we’d definitely like to see more of and consider to have ample potential for refinement, is the craft of cutwork combined with appliqué techniques.

Cutwork which emerged as a sophisticated form of design in 14th century Italy has been adapted into cultures from all parts of the world and still retains value due to the level of skill and delicacy required to implement it.

London Pre-Fall 2013 Collection

Most often used in lace and crochet appliqués for a feminine and formal look as seen on the Fall 2012 international runways, the romance of this trend was spotted most recently at Temperley London’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection through elaborate patchwork appliqué. This reminded us of some of our own immensely talented designers and local artisans who excel at this time honoured craft.

Hairstylists: Artists with a canvas

KARACHI:

While make-up, accessories and the outfit you don may have a role to play in your overall look, an important aspect which is often neglected is your hair. “When you look good, you feel good,” says hairstylist Tariq Amin. Not just that; the first impression you make may just be the last so don’t leave your house with a sloppy hair-do.

While most designers concur that our fashion industry has become more valiant in terms of the cuts and style it promotes, hairstylists also feel they have been a part of a positive change; they underscore that this transformation is visible.

“Hairstylists have the ability to bring change in society and it’s pretty simple — it’s all about communication. Advising clients on what suits them, based on their lifestyle, the shape of their face and their hair type, is our job,” says Saeeda Mandviwalla, CEO of Toni&Guy Karachi. She feels customers should be open to taking advice as stylists know what they are doing. “We are like artists with a canvas — it feels great to look in the mirror and see the changes for both the client and the stylist,” she adds.

With 27 years of experience in this industry, Nabila feels a stylist can only do so much when it comes to bringing about a change — it is ultimately up to the client. “Every individual has the power to bring a change in society and as a stylist, I put my best foot forward too,” she says. “I try to contribute as much as I can by creating a positive image for celebrities and critics.”

Most people would agree that blonde streaks/highlights are popular fashion statements in Pakistan. “People mostly come in for blonde streaks, but nowadays they are open to other colours that we recommend as well — this is a great change to have occurred,” says Saeeda. “Earlier, they were not advised properly on what would suit them so they would end up opting for the stereotyped blonde highlights.”

Nabila feels a stylist’s work should not end at just a haircut — it’s about the entire look. “The overall look created with a cut, colour, texture or style should be suitable to the person’s image and should, in effect, enhance their personal style,” she says.

Despite the efforts hairstylists put in, nothing can be done without the consent of the clients. Back in the day, when having healthy long hair was the best thing that could happen to a girl, taking risks with bolder haircuts and colours was not an option. But in today’s time, young girls and boys have become less averse to risks.

“People today are very much aware of what they want and how they can present themselves best,” says Tariq Amin, who has been in this business for almost 30 years. “However, unfortunately, there is a tendency to want to look like everybody else; but at Tariq Amin’s, we try to promote individuality — provide consultation and guidance before any service.”

Nabila and Saeeda feel media and technology have had a huge impact on the mindset of Pakistanis. “Everyone is connected with what’s happening around the globe due to the internet, opportunities to travel etc and thus, they want the best of everything, and this includes new hairstyles and techniques as well,” says Saeeda, adding that whoever wants to look different, will opt for bolder looks. “Everyone wants to make a style statement and stand out. To me, this begins with your hair.” The bolder, sharper and more unique the look is, the more interesting the person seems.

Scarf up this season

Glamorous yet elegant accessories like scarves and hats have never been a Pakistani woman’s best friend. We only consider things that dangle or have major bling (like necklaces, rings and earrings) to be real accessories.

Even if we wanted to wear hats and scarves, they wouldn’t look good on our typical shalwar kameezes. But that’s when the western-fusion kurta comes to the rescue. Pair the kurta with some jeans, add the right amount of oomph and you can rock pretty much any scarf or hat you like. And since none of the retailers are offering dupattas these days, these scarves can work as a great alternative.

7

Infinity loop scarves

If your scarf always looks messy and comes undone, you may just fall in love with the infinity loop scarf. It’s woven together in a loop so it doesn’t slip off and always look very fashionable. It’s also a great alternative to a dupatta as it covers all the right areas and keeps your neck warm.

9

Neck scarves

If you use a short, brightly coloured scarf and tie it closely around your neck, it instantly gives you a classy look for an evening out. Not only does it make your neck look longer, it completes an outfit without having to invest in earrings or necklaces.

8

Long shawl wraps

It might be winter and you might be shivering all the time, but nothing justifies wearing your long, big shawl like a chowkidaar on night duty. Pin it on the sides, or take two different shawls together to create this effortlessly elegant look.

6

Knotted scarves

While this is a scarf knotting technique European men are famous for, women can’t help but steal it. While Western women may like to keep the knot close to the neck to avoid the harsh wind, us Pakistani women who don’t have to battle extreme weather can keep the scarf a little looser and choose one that’s a bit longer.  All you have to do is fold the scarf lengthwise, put this shorter scarf around your neck and then put the end with the tassles through the loop on the other side. Tighten or loosen it according to your look.

10

For the adventurous Beanies

A ‘beanie’ also called a ‘toque’, is the most common winter hat worn by women. It comes with the most designs, materials and colour variations and keeps your head warm without making you look like a snowman. Now if the hat can look good with a long coat, why shouldn’t it look good with a nice slim fitting kurta?

Style Icon: Sienna Miller

British actor Sienna Miller, who is famous for her Bohemian chic style, can flaunt anything and everything; from a sexy and sultry look for a red carpet event to a comfy streetwear for a day of shopping.

What we love most about her is that she looks good without looking like she has tried too hard. On a regular day out, she won’t have more than basic lipgloss and a hint of mascara. Her blonde tresses may look unkempt, but the messy, bed-head look is part of why she’s on our must-mimic list!

Miller is known for putting together vintage clothing with modern pieces. Accessories are her strength; She loves oversized sunglasses, with beaded necklaces and skinny knit scarves found in her wardrobe. When it comes to shoes, she is more than happy to make you green with envy with her high heels and boots.

The ambassador for Hugo Boss fragrance, Miller has earned various covers in magazines such as Vogue, Elle and Nylon. And that is not all; she launched her own fashion line under London’s Pepe Jeans (a denim and casual wear jeans brand), called Twenty8Twelve, in 2009.

Fashion Police: Racoon on the run

Actor Alia Bhatt was spotted in a rather boring get up at the Daboo Ratani Calendar launch. We expect so much more from this debutante, but it looks like without KJO at her side, she’s doomed to fashion failure. Better luck next time, Alia!

The Charge Sheet

Hair

Flat, tousled, messy hair never looked this bad on any one. Blow dry maybe? What happened to all your sexy hair toys from Student of The Year?

Accessories

A wooden clutch, what kind of choice is that?

Makeup

Once upon forever ago, neat thick eyebrows may have been in trend. But growing bushes on your forehead for eyebrows is not a recommendation any stylist can give. Alia isn’t playing the girl next door too well here. No cover up for those sleepy raccoon eyes and to top it all off, she brings on the kohl which has smeared into her eye bags. Pity for a pretty girl!

Shoes

Those shoes are possibly the worst ever made. Disco Deewane gone down the drain, when keeping those in mind, nothing has ever struck such an out of pitch chord. What’s the matter with her feet we wonder? As if the shoes were not horrible on their own, she’s got nail polish everywhere and she could use a pedicure!

Outfit

That outfit is painful, shiny, loud and exuberant! Where and why did she buy that from, we wonder? Of all the variety available in India, it’s shameful to see her wear that! Those big embroidered balls are just missing lights.

Wear it like

Aishwariya Rai

Aishwariya Rai

Actor Aishwariya Rai Bachan made an appearance at the Lavasa Women’s Drive awards in 2011 in this gorgeous gold kameez and pistachio green churidaar. She looks super elegant with her beautiful locks swept to the side and her million dollar smile. Her make-up is understated and we love her shoes!

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif

Actor Katrina Kaif was seen in this stunning orange anarkali, which she inevitably made popular. It flows perfectly on her, with beautiful detailing on the V-neckline. Her make-up is natural and light, leaving her looking as fresh as ever.

Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta

Actor Preity Zinta was spotted sporting this red ensemble at a recent IPL event in India. She looks stunning in this simple chiffon suit, a bangle, a watch and minimalist make-up that complements her skin tone well. Alia could take cue from her on how to carry the right kind of red.

Indian men conservative: British designer

NEW DELHI:

Men make cautious buyers, but Indian men are even more conservative and traditional when it comes to their dressing style, feels British designer Fabian Lintott, who is currently in India to launch a new range of bags.

“Indian men are more conservative compared to the international field. Indian men are still fairly new to fashion consumerism. Men in general tend to lean towards the more cautious side when it comes to the purchases they make,” Lintott told IANS in an interview.

Based out of London, the 31-year-old is currently in Pondicherry to launch the latest collection of Hidesign bags, a brand he has been associated with from 2006. He is responsible for giving a quirky taste to the Indian brand’s designs.

“I have been fortunate enough to visit the Hidesign factory here in Pondicherry every year for the last six years. I have to be honest, I love coming here. The vibe of India is always electric and contagious. There is a real sense of the way the country is changing and developing, which is exciting. It is always an inspirational experience,” he said.

Lintott feels Indian men need to take their personality into account when choosing their ensembles, without thinking much about society.

“I think you have to be true to yourself. As long as you are comfortable with your style, no one else really matters. In Japan, for instance, men are happy to carry man bags and underarm bags, as well as the more commonly seen city and cross body bags. As long as you are comfortable, I say go for it,” he said.

A graduate of Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design, London, the designer feels there has of late been tremendous growth in the area of men’s accessory. The effect of that, he believes, is reflecting on Indian soil too.

“There is now a huge growth in the men’s accessory market over the last few years. Men have woken up to accessories and to a more adventurous use of colour,” he said.

“I think accessories are and will be ever more important in our lives. With iPads, tablets, laptops and other tech pieces, accessories like the humble despatch bag, briefcase or day bag are called upon more and more to help us carry our precious items. This will lead to more and more demand for bags to fulfil our needs,” he added.

Talking about his design inspiration, he said it varies from simple things to extraordinary landscapes.

“I am fluid with my inspiration sources. I love details and my sources are always varied. It may be a bonnet catch on an old sports car or as varied as leaves from the garden. It is always the little things that spark an idea that leads me to the finished item,” said Lintott. He also revealed that Hidesign will soon launch its first range of sunglasses, shoes and non-leather luggage.
