Indian actor-model Sushmita Sen, winner of the Miss Universe contest in 1994, was spotted at the Enigma launch party in a sexy black number, stylish shoes and trendy accessories. Sen is the epitome of elegance and we adore her stellar body.

Bollywood actor Mugdha Godse made waves with her fabulous fashion choice at the same event. She is totally making a statement in this bronze shimmer dress, red pumps, bronzed skin and lady danger lips.

Elegance unleashed

This

3

Hair & Make-up

She could have done a little more to jazz up that boring flat hair, however, her pout is striking on her glistening skin tone. Her face is bronzed well and her eyes lined with kohl.

Clothes

The dress hugs her gorgeous curves at the waist and the bronze is a smashing colour against her honey skin. We love the peeping shoulder and the ruffled sleeve.

Accessories & Shoes

We’re a little sad she skipped out on the accessories because some gold bracelets would have looked nice. Her red pumps look great when paired with that dress!

That

4

Hair & Make-up

Sen has gorgeous shiny, layered, blow dried hair. Her make-up is subtle and perfect for her yummy skin tone. She is wearing just the right amount of cover up, with bronzed cheeks and plum lips.

Clothes

A black mini dress is an essential in every fashionista’s wardrobe. This one is graceful and the perfect length for those killer legs. The long sleeves give it a conservative look whereas the length balances it completely.

Accessories & Shoes

Her lace necklace is beautiful and remains to be different from what you would usually see. Sexy tie back pointed toe shoes, gorgeous diamond clustered rings and a black clutch all complement her look well.

Bollywood actor-model-VJ Nauheed Cyrusi (remember her from Piya Basanti Re?) looked effortlessly chic in a crayon blue skirt with a black, one-shoulder vest at a party hosted for American rapper Snoop Dogg, who has rechristened himself Snoop Lion.

To get Nauheed’s look, follow these guidelines:

Hair

The 30-year-old VJ left her shoulder-length, chocolate brown tresses hanging freely over her shoulders. To get a similar look, blow dry your hair, part it from the middle and throw it over your shoulder. Really simple!

f3

Make-up

She sported the barely-there make-up look with lightly kohled eyes, a soft pink highlighter accentuating the frame of her lovely face and nude lips. Her red nails added all the more oomph to her overall look. Go for Hashmi kohl (Rs150), Rimmel blush in Pink Rose (Rs550), Mac Lustre Lipstick (Rs1,700) and OPI Color So Hot It Berns (Rs300) for matching nail colour.

f2

Accessories

She accessorised with a pair of earrings, a thin silver bracelet, broad brown belt and a silver round clutch. For similar stuff, check out local stores, Accessorize or Saffron. You can grab a similar waist belt at Mango (for Rs1,200) and a clutch at Debenhams (for Rs3,000).

f1

Outfit

Nauheed was seen wearing a plain, black figure-hugging, one-shoulder vest over a long skirt. This black and blue combo paired with red nails and neutral make-up won her full 10 on our style-o-metre. Plain black tank tops are essentials in any wardrobe and can be found at Mango (Rs1,500) or Fiction (Rs500). However, for a skirt like this check out stores like Mantra, Mango, Debenhams or Zainab Market.

f4

Shoes

She opted for silver strappy sandals. Look for a similar pair at Marie Claire, Vincci or Charles and Keith (Rs2,000 to Rs4,000).

Hip Hop singer Hard Kaur who was recently seen in the movie Patiala House, was spotted wearing this horrific get up at the 58th annual Filmfare Awards Nominations Party. Shiny leather leopard printed pants and jacket score her a big fat zero on our style-o-meter. Leather is extremely sexy when worn right, and a disaster the way Hard Kaur is wearing it.

The charge sheet

HAIR

That up-do would have looked way better if she was wearing a gown, but with that outfit, it just looks like she couldn’t control her hair so she put it up.

MAKE-UP

Hold back the shimmer when your skin is so shiny! The lipstick is too loud and too matte for her complexion; with that much shimmer on her eyes and face, a neutral glossy colour would have looked better.

OUTFIT

She may have just picked up that outfit at a Halloween store, because we’re wondering what she was thinking. Shiny leopard printed leather fitted to the tee, umm, no, that’s not a flattering look at all.

SHOES & ACCESSORIES

Gold accessories with a black and silver outfit is all wrong, it doesn’t take a fashion queen to figure that one out. The shoes are okay when paired with that outfit.

Wear it like

Nicole Kidman

nicole

The evergreen actor Nicole Kidman was spotted wearing this classy outfit. A fitted black leather skirt paired with a button down black leather jacket and to add some colour she’s wearing a tea pink scarf in her neck. Hard Kaur could take some tips from Hollywood on how to wear leather with class!

Fergie

Fergie

Singer Fergie was spotted on the set of the hit reality show American Idol. She’s wearing knee length rocker chic boots, leather pants and a black fitted tee all complimented by metal accessories! Way to pull off the look, understated make-up and lovely goldie locks falling in soft waves.

Nicky Hilton

Nicky

Socialite Nicky Hilton was seen wearing this uber cool outfit, we love the way she’s played with her accessories, funky clutch and blue nail polish! Black and white is always a stellar combination.

The award season has finally begun! Starting from People’s Choice Awards and Golden Globes in Hollywood, Bollywood began the festivities with their 19th Annual Color Screen Awards. B-town divas went all glamorous and glitzy for the event. We bring you a round-up of some of the beauties, who graced the red carpet.

Parineeti Chopra

The actor, who made it big with her debut film Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, looked downright odd in this Sabyasachi Mukherjee maxi dress with a shirt bodice and full flared skirt. She wore her hair in a bun with side bangs brushing her forehead with the embellished hair band taking away from her look.

Shruti Hassan

The daughter of actor Kamal Hassan attracted more than a few eyeballs at the awards. She looked stunning in a purple gown designed by Amit GT. Her locks fell freely over her shoulder in waves, framing her lovely face and accessorised with just a pair of dangling earrings.

Chitrangada Singh

The actor of Desi Boyz fame looked like a lovely bride in this creamy white strapless Roberto Cavalli gown with a long train. She wore her dark tresses in loose curls. With smokey eyes, pink blush and a red pout, Singh looked ravishing. A pair of silver stud earrings was her only accessory; we wish she would have gone for a delicate neckpiece and something on her wrist to add more flavour. Nevertheless, she was a sight for sore eyes. Thumbs up!

Aditi Rao Hydari

The star opted for an angelic avatar for the star-studded night. She wore a white Gauri and Nainika one-shouldered gown to the event with her hair in an elegant bun. Although we are not too happy with the lack of accessories, these silver dangling earrings were a perfect choice for this outfit. Aditi scores a full 10 on our style-o-metre for this look.

Ameesha Patel

Ameesha Patel stole our hearts with this look. She looked sizzling hot in this seductive black Ramona Narang gown. With her hair tied back and bangs falling on her forehead, Ameesha was a sight for sore eyes. Shimmery eye shadow with kohled eyes, a pink glow on her cheeks and rosy pink pout made her look fresh.

Alia Bhatt

The debutant of 2012, Alia Bhatt surprised us with this ensemble. The gold shimmery, armour-inspired, short number by Gaurav Gupta accentuated her figure perfectly. With a funky up-do and perfect make-up — including eye shimmer, kohled eyes and coral lips — Alia looked glamourous and fun.

Actor Jennifer Lawrence made her debut in the mega movie The Hunger Games last year and is now going to appear in the award winning comedy Silver Linings Playbook next to the gorgeous actor Bradley Cooper.

Jessica was spotted at the Golden Globes in a beautiful orange gown by Christian Dior and her make-up made a statement of being the look of the evening. She has been seen on the covers of Vanity Fair, Elle and Vogue. This star is making waves with her choice of colour and stellar hair styles. We’re in awe of her stylist because she’s been donning the most stunning and extravagant colours from bright orange red to deep gold, the elegant black and crème white. Never forgetting her stand out eyes, this actor wears designers like Valentino, Prabal Gurung and Altuzaara, among others. Miss Fantastic Four stole our heart with this salmon hue gown she wore at the 2013 Golden Globes held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Fantastic colour, we must say! After the fairytale look, Jessica opted for something retro mod for the Golden Globes after party. Despite the two completely opposite wardrobe choices, she managed to nail both looks.

This

01

Hair and make-up

Jessica tied her hair in a sleek side-swept ponytail for the after party. However, she went with the same make-up, which managed to go well with her checkered dress. That’s what we call  perfect make-up.

Outfit

The 31-year-old went retro mod in her white and black checkered Louis Vuitton long-sleeved dress, brushing her long legs right below the knee. Whether it’s an evening gown or some fun number like this, it is clear that Jessica can flaunt anything.

Accessories  and shoes

Jessica put finishing touches to her after party look with a matching black clutch and black patent point-toe Casadei pumps. We simply adore the smooth switch between the looks. Full 10 for that!

That

02

Hair and make-up

She wore her ombre hair in loose, big waves around her shoulders. She went for a bright coral lipshade to complement the subtle hue of her gown and outlined her brown peepers with loads of mascara.

Outfit

Jessica wore a melon silk Oscar de la Renta gown. The strapless gown hugged her hourglass figure and the colour complemented her sun-kissed skin. We give Jessica a full 10 for this lovely ensemble.

Accessories and shoes

Jessica paired the dress with Harry Winston jewellery and a Roger Vivier clutch. Her diamond-studded neckpiece is making us green with envy.

Hats and caps in vogue this winter

NEW DELHI:

Stylish hats and caps, available in a wide variety of designs and colours, are a hit this winter. Designers suggest newsboys, berets and cloches to top up your style well.

“Hats have made an amazing comeback this season. The berets and the cloche hats in bright colours, as well as in black and white, are very much in vogue for women. The floppy hat has also found itself back in vogue at brunches and derby events,” designer Shouger Merchant Doshi told IANS.

Internationally, celebrities like Kate Middleton, Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian and Penelope Cruz are known for their fascination with the accessory. In India, a few women like Aishwarya Rai, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have flaunted it in movies and at events.

For regular fashionistas, futuristic hats, bold-blocked berets and floppy acrylic ‘70s hats are making waves, says designer Aniket Satam.

Hats01-PHOTO-FILE

“Futuristic styles are in trend. Go for smaller hats with unique construction. Unusual shapes like hexagonal, drop and futuristic abstract are in vogue,” Satam told IANS.

“The ‘70s floppy hats are trendy, but nothing beats the classiness of traditional woollen berets. Pop them up in vibrant shades like purple and teal for more effect. Sloppy caps in animal prints are also dramatic options for evening wear,” he added.

Hats or caps, the choice is yours, but one thing is for sure: this fashion accessory serves a dual purpose — it either completes your look and keeps you warm or helps you stand out in a crowd.

“People used to have winter caps rather than hats in their wardrobe during chilly weather, but this is changing. Hats are getting into the wish lists of a lot of people,” said designer Vandy Mehra. “Of course we are not as elaborate as the west on the hats but, yes, a trendy set of a few does take you through the nice winter brunches.”

The element of fear leads to a good show: Wardha Saleem

KARACHI:

Wardha Saleem is best known for her prêt-a-porter as well as lawn collections — modern and traditional embroidery, vibrant colours and block prints. Her latest collection Folk Play, a colourful exhibition of psychedelic prints, was one of the best collections to have come out of Fashion Pakistan Week (FPW4).

“I belong to Sindh and that is why this rich culture is so prevalent in my work,” says Wardha, referring to her Jhirki and Folk Play collections. “At the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture [IVSAA], I learnt about this craft in detail — how to take inspiration from this culture and turn it into a statement piece in today’s time.” The designer did her bachelors in textile design from IVSAA in 2003 and has been teaching at the institute since.

5design-Anushay Furqan

Wardha feels that if you want to reach the pinnacle of your career and “keep the ball rolling”, you need to love what you do. “We always put something special in our clothes,” she says, adding that people consequently try to copy the embroidery and overall style. “However, there is a lot more to a complete outfit than just that. It cannot be copied entirely.” Referring to the imitations of her lawn designs from 2011, she says, “I believe you need to be a trendsetter. People follow you and you should enjoy it and not get angry — it’s part of the game.”

For the designer, it is the constant support from family, friends and workers that has allowed the label to make a place for itself in the fashion realm. Her brothers look after the brand’s marketing and legal affairs while her friends, Tapu Javeri (official photographer of the brand) and Ayaz Anis, have been pillars of support. “A strong family system brings out the best in you,” she smiles.

“The craftsmen that work for us are very poor and I feel responsible for them,” she continues, talking about her workers based in Tando Allahyar who are responsible for patchwork, Tando Muhammad Khan for ajrak and Karachi for block-printing. “As designers, I feel it’s our responsibility to save our traditional craft. Look at India, their craft industry is blooming,” she says. “We have a lot of talent and skill in Pakistan too and we need to save it from falling apart.”

When it comes to the dynamic and stressful phenomenon of fashion week, Wardha feels anxiety and stress are prerequisites to a successful show. “I get scared at the beginning of every show, like it’s the very first time; but the element of fear certainly leads to a good show,” she says. She also feels that fashion weeks provide a colossal platform to designers and give them opportunities to grow. “I love the madness of fashion weeks and the competition that is out there — it challenges you and shows that you cannot be monotonous if you want to survive,” she adds.

Up close and personal

For Wardha, a good life partner should have a “strong soul with family values and good morals” and should be open to others’ opinions. He should be “someone who doesn’t view life from one dimension and is open to other perspectives too”.

“Being in love teaches you a lot about life and yourself — it’s important to fall in love at least once in your life,” she says. When asked why she hasn’t yet been spotted with a significant other, she says, “I would love to be spotted — just waiting for my Mr Right.”

Fashion police: Too much of something

$

The young and super fit Bollywood actor Soha Ali Khan is usually quite fashionable, but she had too much going on with this look at the DVD launch of feature film Life Goes On in Mumbai.

She does have interesting clothes and accessories, but it doesn’t mean she has to wear them altogether!

Hair

We love side swept hair, but really wish Soha hadn’t coloured it this awful orange. A few inches off wouldn’t hurt either — right now it looks like a bushy mane.

Make-up

Is she wearing any make-up? We see some eyeliner and mascara but otherwise her face looks pretty washed out. With skin like hers, Soha could really do with some tinted moisturiser and a peach crème blush. The nude lips are just unforgivable!

Outfit

So here’s what the problem is: we love the boyfriend blazer, the floral printed dress with a skinny belt as well as the opaque tights, but not when worn altogether! Imagine if she had gone for nude leggings, and a white pashmina shawl instead of the jacket and black tights. Get the drift?

Shoes

The black shoes are a must have, but their literally disappearing into her tights. Something, anything a little less boring would have been more palatable.

Accessories

So she has a shiny red Louis Vuitton satchel. Yay for her, but it makes no sense whatsoever with this already too ambitious look. The long necklace is a must-have, but did she really have to wear it with this dress so it takes away from the belt? A chunky silver statement necklace would have been so much hotter!

Wore it better!

01

Model

This model paired up this red satchel with a plain white top and basic blue jeans. Here’s a lesson for Soha: when you opt for something as ambitious as this bag, pair it up with something less overwhelming. A simple hair-do and make-up goes really well with the entire look.

04

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried looked pretty in purple on the red carpet at the LA premiere of her new movie In Time. Amanda wore a purple, floral-print, drop waist dress. With the wavy hairstyle accentuating the frame of her face, she opted for smokey eyes, pink highlighter and rosy pink lips. She tied the entire look together with a black belt, big bangles and black peep toes. What makes this look an instant success is that she left the dress as it is, rather than pairing it up with other things.

Rachel Bilson

Hollywood actor Rachel Bilson flaunted this chic look at an event. Styled in a printed black dress topped with a rolled-sleeve black blazer and nude platform pumps, Rachel looked classy. We love how she paired up her mini dress with a black blazer but chose to show off her long legs. Rachel accessorised her outfit with a black long-chain bag, which complemented her dress, and a matching black wrist band. She finished off her look with nude platform pumps that added colour to her all black ensemble.

This or that?: Esha Gupta vs Alia Bhatt

$

Actors Esha Gupta and Alia Bhatt pose during the announcement of this year’s Stardust Awards in Mumbai.

Between the two, we can’t get our eyes off the glamorous Esha. Pretty young Alia has a lot to learn before she makes it to our fashion favourites list.

Alia Bhatt

Alia made her acting debut at the age of 19 in director Karan Johar’s Student of the Year, which went on to become a commercial success. However, the young one has a lot to learn about making style statements and prepping up her wardrobe.

Hair & Make-up

Flat hair is boring. Alia really needs to do something about those eye brows, or at least grow a fringe to hide them. We get that she’s a kid but still, a little bit of make-up would have been nice.

Clothes

The turquoise blue blazer is nice when paired with those (tight) white pants.

Accessories & Shoes

The shoes are cool, but where are her accessories? No points for plain Jane.

Esha Gupta

Model-actor Esha, who debuted in Jannat 2, prides herself for coming in third in Femina Miss India 2007 and going on to compete in the Miss India contest. With her gorgeous honey complexion and must-mimic style, this girl is on fire!

Hair & Make-up

Her hair is tied back in a loose bun and is the perfect hairstyle to emphasise those statement earrings. Her make-up is glamorous and natural, with heavily lined mascara pumped eyes, a natural blush and pink under toned lippy.

Clothes

Her fitted black tights with the gold zippers are bang on trend. The shocking pink printed blouse looks so sexy when paired with those tights.

Accessories & Shoes

We love her gold loop statement earrings and her elegant pointed-toe shoes. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Round-up: Yay or Nay

Whether it is a red carpet event or a launch party, B-town bombshells are always there to set the event ablaze. Here is a round-up of the past week’s best and worst fashion choices:

Karisma Kapoor

Karisma looks fabulous in cobalt smock top paired with black pants. She is wearing lots of mascara and eyeliner, which makes her eyes look bigger and prettier. The pink blush and glossy lips are also perfect. Our favourite, however, is this gorgeous necklace with gold edges.

Anushka Sharma

While she is trying to keep up with fashion trends, Anushka has managed to look like a vampire — and not in the Cullen way. The oxblood lips and nails are bang on trend, but the pale face and darker-than-natural eyebrows are quite off. The 24-year-old wore a lovely Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna outfit, which consisted of a white sequinned shirt with a short front and long back paired with grey tights, but the nude suede shoes are just dreary.

Priyanka Chopra

Not loving this hair on Priyanka; in the time of fishtail braids, why would she opt for this messy half done braid with the tips looking dry and frizzy? The traditional demure anarkali by Shehla Khan is boring, but the red pout is uber fun and her glittery peep-toes save the day.

Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa looks lovely, but this may be a case of over matching your outfit. Orange and gold top, orange nails, a gold necklace, gold skirt and gold shoes are quite an overdose of just two colours. We love the skirt and top, but wish that Shilpa had done something fun with her hair instead of the bouncy blow dry.

Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif was spotted looking cute and casual at the promotional event of animated film Main Krishna Hoon. The half-tied hair doesn’t look well-done, but the natural make-up and candy orange blazer look great. Katrina could have opted for a funkier necklace and shoes, but we suppose minimalistic is her style.

Deepika Padukone

Now here is someone who never gets it wrong. Deepika looks as graceful as ever in this sleek black dress that fits her like a glove. We love the detail of lace across the front, and the addition of a chunky gold cuff and red nails. It’s nice to see her in soft, light make-up and blow dried open hair with some volume on the crown.

Red Carpet Recap: Les Miserables

Hollywood actor Anne Hathaway may have got widespread appreciation for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables, but it’s her killer red carpet moments we’re rooting for. The dainty Hollywood beauty made several appearances for premiers of musical Les Miserables in a series of breathtaking dresses.

During the London premiere, Anne hit the red carpet in a backless white Givenchy dress with pearl beading and off-the-shoulder sleeves. Although the sleeves on Anne’s dress are loose and billowing, the gown’s flattering silhouette shows off her slim figure perfectly.

f1

At the after party in London, Anne showed up in a strapless blue and gold Altuzarra ensemble with a black skirt and black pumps to match. Five days later in New York City, she wowed us with her black taffeta Tom Ford gown with a cape-style back and a thigh-high slit paired with a pair of sexy boots.

Just a few days later, she arrived at the Late Show with David Letterman wearing a form-fitting red floral dress and black pumps. Anne looked hot and sultry with her short crop and sizzling red pout.

Her Critics’ Choice Award look was just another drool worthy moment for the Les Miserables star. In a shimmery, sexy slip dress by Oscar de la Renta with low-key everything else, Anne looked gorgeous.

Saadia Mirza reveals new collection

LAHORE:

Saadia Mirza’s Nurul Aine Collection was showcased at the Veranda Bistro on a gorgeous winter Thursday afternoon. The designer presented her trousseau collection inspired by the Mughul era, for which the venue had been transformed to a magical place with its ethereal set up and a gazebo style ramp.

It was refreshing to see a showcase catered only to the client base of the particular designer, while upholding the exclusivity of the event. While the courtyard was delicately adorned and exuded luxury and magic, sadly Saadia Mirza’s collection was not too impressive.

The colour palette ranged between the ivory neutrals infused with gold, aqua and maroon. “I have taken the later part of the Mughul era as an inspiration for this collection and have given it a modern twist,” said the designer. “The modernity is added through the cuts and silhouettes.” En vogue with this season’s romance with volume, Mirza’s collection presented some interesting pieces. The Victorian jacket styled over the volumised lehnga modeled by Ayaan had a pretty silhouette.

models-PHOTOS-Shafiq Malik-Express

The colour palette ranged between the ivory neutrals infused with gold, aqua and maroon. PHOTO: SHAFIQ MALIK/EXPRESS

“Saadia Mirza is super expensive and caters to the elite of the elite. We wanted to give her a show that catered to that market,” said Aamir Mazhar of Savvy PR. “For this reason, we only invite a select few people who would appreciate her work.” It is usually hard to put a benchmark on the embellishment aesthetics of a designer but one can critique the structure of the collection. What kept the collection from making a mark remained its subsequent lack of structure and substandard stitching. Baggy sleeves and safety pins showing from the hemlines revealed signs of rushed tailoring and fitting deadlines. With a lehnga almost falling off one model, the fittings left a bad taste.

Mirza made use of many different layers of embellishment and fabrics to create her pieces; from moqaish on volume-filled skirts and shirts to additional rosettes and lace trimmings along with pearl belts along the waistline. Jamdani on its own added a feel of regality and opulence to the outfits. Mirza doesn’t appeal to everyone but one could put her in the same category as Sonia Azhar, she has a market for her work whether it is from Faisalabad, Sialkot or Gujranwala. She does what she likes to do and caters to a very specific market that is not everyone’s cup of tea. The colour combinations remained safe but aesthetically pleasing and very wearable. Socialite Naila Ishtiaq and Veranda owner and fashionista Mariam Saqib were the showstoppers and walked out to cheers and crowd appreciation.

ISLAMABAD: Tailored to meet the modern day requirements, a new line of apparel for women, made an entrance at posh F-6 sector on Saturday.

Titled “Zarbakhtha”, the label is the brainchild of the American-born Mariya Zarbakhtha Yousafzai and offers a unique blend of bridal, formal, semi-formal and casual wear.

“Zarbakhtha means luck or fortune in Pashto language and that is what I hope my work earns me,” said the young designer while talking to The Express Tribune.

Even though she has been designing dresses, this was the first time she was exhibiting them at her own outlet.

Two new salons promise to pamper you silly

KARACHI: From a small salon based in her living room 33 years ago, Peng Qureshi has grown to become a recognised name for hair and skincare. The stylist has now launched her brand new flagship salon, Peng’s, in Clifton, which her son — Toni&Guy Lahore’s Shammal Qureshi — describes as “a one-stop shop.”

“When I came to Pakistan from Malaysia in the ‘80s, I saw a lot of potential here,” says Peng. “After 33 years, I feel like I owed it to my clients to give them a new place where they could pamper themselves.” The new venture is her sixth salon in the country, with two women’s and one men’s salon already in Karachi and two Toni&Guy outlets in Lahore.

Peng admits she has been lucky when it comes to loyal clients. When asked what makes them come back every time, she says, “Clients want value for money and if you deliver, they will always come back.” She feels her unique selling proposition is intensive skincare as well as haircuts and colours.

“We are famous for cuts and colour as well but make-up hasn’t been our strongest area — my other salons were too small and cramped so I couldn’t do it all,” admits Peng. “But with this new outlet, I want to expand in every direction so it’s a complete place for clients.”

Peng remains fearless when it comes to competition. “Every time a new competitor enters the market, you make an effort to make your brand better; you work harder,” she says. “Otherwise you just think you are the best and get lazy. You start thinking you don’t need to learn new things or grow.”

Training and taking courses from time to time is also important for Peng. “I leave the country three to four times a year to go for training. I’ll be going to Paris this year and China next month — Toni&Guy wants to open an outlet there,” Peng explains. In Pakistan, her next outlet will open in Islamabad.

The salon launch included a fashion show where models including Nadia Hussain and Fauzia donned outfits by designers such as Sana Safinaz, Adnan Pardesy and Sania Maskatiya. This was followed by a video presentation of the salon, which guests watched as they munched on crunchy wontons, brownies and colourful slushies.

LAIQA HASAN SALON  & SPA

Laiqa Hasan launch07-PHOTO-PUBLICITY

Laiqa Hasan has over 20 years of experience as a hair and make-up artist. Due to health problems, she went under the grid two years ago but is now well and back with a new and complete salon which is also a spa. Saturday witnessed the opening of LH Laiqa Hasan Salon & Spa.

“Laiqa Hasan is a known name for make-up and beauty care and today, with tough competition ahead of us, I wanted to open this salon and spa so people know we are a brand,” said Hasan, who has done the make-up of Tanhaiyan: Naye Silsilay and Coke Kahani casts. “People trust my work and that’s why they come to me.”

The salon has a sophisticated, relaxed and calm aura; white walls, a wooden interior and a staircase decorated with flowers. The services will now include hair styling and cuts, beauty care, make-up and facials and massages. Hasan admits that her prices are “a bit steep” but that she will be offering discount coupons.

“The price range will be competitive because I strongly believe in class; my services are targeted at a niche market,” she continued. “I want people to come and get various treatments here and never be disappointed with my technical staff.”

The beautician is known for working her magic on celebs like Sadia Imam. When asked whether Imam would remain on her list, she said, “No, I am done with her. Sarah Loren has now signed up for my brand and I will be doing her make-up and styling — she has potential.”

Life has not always been easy on Hasan as two years ago she suffered from paralysis. “I was completely handicapped — it was a very abnormal and difficult time for me,” she says. “I took great care of myself and with the support of my family, I recovered to a great extent by the end of 2012.” The whole time she was ill, Hasan contemplated over how her salon could be revamped.

“When people said I could never get better, I knew things needed to change,” she said.

The Stardust Awards 2013 that took place on Saturday in Mumbai saw some beautiful B-town beauties at the red carpet. Here is a round-up of some of the A-list actors present at the event:

Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi looked elegant in her navy blue off shoulder Notte dress by Marchesa. She played it safe with the colour but failed to make any waves on the red carpet that night. When are you hiring a stylist?

Bipasha Basu

Bips picked a yellow gown from Gucci’s spring presentation and looked beautiful with a breathtaking traditional necklace paired with her western ensemble.

Alia Bhatt

Alia looked exceptionally charming in a pearl white strapless gown by Shehla Khan. While she looks graceful and angelic, we do wish she had done something more than her usual plain and simple make-up. She is also in need of a manicure and a major nail polish change!

Jiah Khan

Jiah looked gorgeous in a coral gown by Ramona Narang. Her make-up was spot on, complementing her outfit and bronze skin.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka appeared on the red carpet in a ruffled black Armani gown. The dress is glamorous and we like to see her dress up, but we’re giving extra points for the stylish hair. Some accessories would have added the ‘wow’ factor that seems to be amiss.

Raveena Tondon

Raveena looks every bit a traditional beauty in her Manish Malhotra peshwas. She made her way on to the red carpet shimmering in gold and making a statement with her bold lips.

Parineeti Chopra

Parineeti wore black yet again, this time in a lehenga/choli by Manish Malhotra. The choli was too busy and she could have done more with her hair. Plus, the outfit is not flattering on her figure at all!

Kerry Washington

Kerry was pure elegance at the awards; she wore a Rodarte dress and Christian Louboutin shoes. Her hair was swept up in a tight bun with side bangs framing her face.

Marion Cotillard

Marion gave the word ‘stunning’ a new meaning. The actor was dressed in Dior Haute Couture and accessorised with Dior shoes and special creation Chopard jewels.

Naomi Watts

The 44-year-old actor was accompanied by her partner Live Schreiber on the red carpet. Naomi was dressed in a Marchesa gown with Christian Louboutin shoes and a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch.

Blow dry and hair care 101

KARACHI:

Isn’t it awful when you spend Rs500 for getting a bouncy and beautiful blow dry, but your hair shows no signs of being tamed and volumised two hours later? To end your post-blow dry woes, we talked to leading stylists Mubashir Khan, Nina Lotia and Saeeda Mandviwalla of Toni&Guy Karachi who share tips on how to make the fun in your hair last longer and keep it healthy at the same time.

Too hot to handle

Too much heat from hair dryers can cause grave damage to your hair. “Using a heat protective product before getting a blow dry, helps minimise the damage,” says Mubashir, adding that the product forms a protective layer or coat around your hair.

Saeeda agrees, adding that products can be used to coat and moisturise the hair. “It’s vital to use protein sprays and conditioners without parabens sodium chloride and sulphate to protect hair from UVA and UVB rays; regular trimming is also important,” she says.

Nina feels that harmful effects can be minimised by using good quality brushes and hair dryers which “should be controlled on correct temperatures.”

What to apply before

Applying serum, spray or some anti-frizz product before getting a blow dry is a common practice. But is it the right way to go? Nina begs to differ, as she says, “For a long-lasting blow dry, less product should be applied as it ends up making the hair heavy.”

Mubashir feels it all depends on the look you are trying to achieve. “In any case, the use of a heat protective spray is always recommended,” he says, adding that it protects the hair from heat.

Saeeda sums it up by saying, “While there are numerous products to choose from, the key is to the pick the right product which is suitable for your specific hair type [dry, oily, colour-treated].”

No hot showers

Who doesn’t love to shower in hot water to beat the winter chills? But before you get too comfortable with the idea, keep in mind the consequences. “Very hot water is harmful for your scalp  — even more than it is for your hair,” says Nina. Saeeda feels water should be warm and not too hot. “It helps providing a healthy pH balance; hot water, on the other hand, makes your scalp oily,” she says.

Nullifying the protein effect

Without realising the after effects of our actions, we sometimes over-do it with our hair care regime. “Getting a blow dry right after a protein treatment defeats the whole purpose of the treatment which is to improve the texture and feel of your hair,” says Mubashir.

The oily scalp

One common issue that most of us have post-blow dry is the problem of an oily scalp. “Avoiding the use of a conditioner before getting a blow dry will help prevent an oily scalp,” says Mubashir. Nina, however, feels, “It only gets oily if you brush your hair too much — it aggravates the scalp.”

Saeeda offers a different solution. “Your scalp will not get oily after a blow dry if you use a label m shampoo — a spray that removes oil from your hair and gives a blow-dry effect,” she says.

Turn up the volume

Achieving the right amount of volume in your hair has to do with the brushes, products and techniques used. “If the technique is right, a good-quality round ceramic brush will help volumise both straight and curly hair,” says Mubashir. “Rolling a brush into the roots correctly with a good volumising product enhances the results.”

For Nina, it depends on the type of hair you have. “For straight hair, smaller sections of your hair should be treated with smaller brushers and to make curly hair straight, bigger brushes should be used,” she says. “For volume, lift the hair from the roots when you blow dry.”

“Brushes used should be of premium quality with good quality bristles — a volumising product should also be used,” says Saeeda. “For curly hair, a medium to large round brush should be used.”

Oil your hair — but for how long?

While Mubashir feels leaving oil in your hair for a couple of hours should suffice, Nina believes letting it stay for hours can be detrimental. “In fact, oiling too much makes your hair dry while leaving the scalp oily,” she says.

Saeeda says 30 to 45 minutes is sufficient to keep both your hair and scalp healthy.

Be good to yourself

Nina, Mubashir and Saeeda all agree that the use of a good shampoo, conditioner and regular treatments result in healthy hair. “A healthy diet is also very important when it comes to nourishing your hair — a good dose of protein along with vegetables and fruits are essentials,” Mubahir says.

“Hair fall occurs when you have dandruff, vitamin deficiencies and can also be traced down to hormonal issues,” says Nina. She insists that clients should use hair fall shampoos and avoid tying wet hair.
