Fashion Police: Mrs Shabby!

$

Nobody expects celebrities to be dressed to kill all the time, but a little fashion sense and maybe some lip gloss is all that is required to look halfway decent. Actor Genelia D’ Souza was recently spotted exiting a movie in this shabby get up. She needs to learn a thing or two about how to be casual and yet look presentable.

HAIR

Straight bed head hair is not cool; she could have at least attempted to tie up her hair in a fashionable ponytail if nothing.

MAKE-UP

Walking out of the house looking like a pale ghost could scare a crowd. The application of some blush and lip gloss is no effort at all. Shame on you Genelia, what will your heart throb husband think?

ACCESSORIES

That loud ugly orange gym bag is by far the worst accessory to be paired with that outfit.

SHOES

Was she going for a movie, or did she just get out of a kick boxing class? Those sneakers are definitely Rocky Balboa inspired.

Wore it better!

Katie Holmes

f5

Celebrity mom Katie always rocks a fun outfit! She was seen wearing blue skinny jeans, a white summer top and beige peep toe heels. She’s got minimal make-up, kohl eyes and lip gloss.

Less can be more if done properly!

Ellen Pompeo

f3

Actor Ellen was spotted stopping off at her local Starbucks for her morning coffee in Los Angeles. She was dressed casually in a plaid shirt, boots, jeans and Ray ban aviator sunglasses.

Genelia could learn to cover up her face with a pair of trendy shades if she decides on stepping out with no make-up again.

Miranda Kerr

f4

Model Miranda was looking super chic in her dark beige capri’s, killer boots, loose fitted striped top and leather jacket.

Her oversized maroon bad and classic Ray bans complement her look to the tee.

Menswear needs to cash in on retail boom: Varun Bahl

$

NEW DELHI:

The menswear segment in India needs urgent attention and the best way to reach out to a larger market is to cash in on the online retail boom, says fashion designer Varun Bahl, who crafts clothes for both genders.

“I think menswear needs a lot of attention in India and a lot of designers are doing it. One can see tremendous change in the menswear market and it is much more different from what we used to see earlier,” Bahl told IANS in an interview.

His own menswear range, the label Karan Johar+Varun Bahl, a joint brainchild of the designer and Bollywood film-maker Karan Johar, has recently gone online at designer Pernia Qureshi’s pop up shop, an ecommerce venture.

The line is an assortment of casual shirts in white, grey, navy blue and black.

Discussing the new venture, Bahl says the decision to take the label to the online space was prompted by a specific reason.

“It is our attempt to bring elegance and variety to the menswear market. Indian men experiment to a very small extent and thus, we have tried to showcase the classic pieces with a little bit of twist to make it more contemporary,” he added. “Online retail is the best way to reach out to the whole world; so we are trying to use the medium as much as possible and it has been showing great results till now.”

The partnership between two major stalwarts — Bahl and KJo, as the film-maker is fondly called — happened almost six years ago when Bahl had first designed for the film-maker.

As a team, do they face any creative differences?

“When you work with someone, obviously there are times when you get into creative differences. That is a part and parcel of life. Two people partnering and doing a collection together means there will be slight creative differences,” he said. “However, in the end, you do come to the conclusion that the best options come out of those creative differences.”

The designer, a National Institute of Fashion Technology graduate, launched his standalone label, Varun Bahl in 2001. And there has been no looking back since.

Known for his innovative use of exclusive fabrics and colours in his menswear and womenswear designs, he has successfully showcased his collection at fashion events in Paris and Milan.

“My definition of fashion is luxury and, for me, luxury is happiness. Bohemian-minded, in control, mature and experimental, that’s how I see my individual buyer,” said the designer, who is a regular at Indian fashion extravaganzas.

In India, his creations have been spotted on several celebrities, including the very graceful Madhuri Dixit. And while several designers have showcased their skills in films, it is a big no for Bahl right now.

“I don’t design specifically for movies, but you can see my clothes in the movies. I don’t have anything of that sort [styling for movies] in my mind as of now. So for the moment, styling for Bollywood movies is a no,” he said.

Lawn race begins: Get, set, go!

LAHORE:

Low and behold, the lawn season is upon us again. This is what we call Christmas for Pakistani women as they lose all sense of decorum to get their hands on designer lawn.

This year will not be any different as we have some of the hottest members of the fashion industry entering the race for the best lawn in town. Sania Maskatiya, Nida Azwer, Zara Shahjahan, Ali Xeeshan, Kuki Concepts and Fahad Hussayn along with JJ Valaya from India are all working tirelessly to put their first lawn collections together. The Express Tribune brings an exclusive scoop of what to expect and who’s doing what this season.

Sania Maskatiya, who has paired with Sapphire Textiles this season, reveals that her collection will include floral prints and geometrics. “I am super excited and psyched to be working on this project; we learn fabric development in school and now I am getting a chance to implement it all,” says Maskatiya. “The collection is catered more to aunties’ needs as there are chiffon dupattas, laces and embroidered panels.” She adds the pieces reflect her signature style and “one could create three outfits out of one suit.”

Maskatiya’s collection will be launched on March 2 in Karachi and March 9 in Lahore and the expected price per outfit is Rs4,500 to Rs5,500.

Zahid Khan of Kuki Concepts has teamed up with Dawood Faizan Textiles to launch his very first lawn collection. “I wanted to do lawn my way and I needed that leverage to experiment; Dawood Faizan is allowing that to happen,” says Khan, adding that his lawn will not only be different but also extravagant. Kuki Concepts prides itself in creating six varying collections in 2012 alone and this lawn collection will be a tribute to all its work done in that year. “I am taking two prints from each collection and will work with those concepts to create this collection,” he adds.

Khan admits that while he doesn’t want his lawn to look like shaadi attire, it will still be luxurious. “I am selling an entire look and that means it has everything from embellishments to accessories — whatever it needs to complete the look we’re trying to create,” he says. Apart from banarsi panels and Chantilly lace borders, Kuki Concepts will be adding earrings and neck pieces too. The collection will launch in March and prices will range between Rs5,000 to Rs6,000.

Zara Shahjahan will be working with Kamal Textiles, that made its debut in the market last year with Elan. “I have always loved working with cotton, so lawn was the next step for me,” says Shahjahan, adding that it’s been a great experience being able to create her own fabric at a mass production level. She loves working with different prints as it is evident from her previous cotton collections.

“The turnover is obviously huge because you can’t compare couture to mass production — all designers are paid a handsome fee that turns their revenues around completely,” Shahjahan says, talking about the economic aspect of producing lawn. “While it’s tedious, it is also a learning experience for me, as I am not used to working on the production side on an industrial level.” She has incorporated vintage themes and florals, which she has worked with in the past, and has also introduced ethnic motifs in her upcoming lawn collection, which will launch on March 14.

From creating clothes to designing lifestyles, Ali Xeeshan seems to have done it all. In partnership with Shariq Textiles, a company that has produced Asim Jofa’s collections in the past, Xeeshan is now ready to enter this year’s cutthroat lawn race. “I am working with geometric prints, old English Victorian [designs] and flower power,” says Xeeshan, adding that he will also be working with baroque patterns, panels, tassels, buttons, satin finishing and lace trimmings. “I will also repeat the techniques I used in my gota fabric collection [at fashion week] in order to add that extra oomph this lawn collection needs.”

Xeeshan wants his collection to be prominent and easily spotted from a distance. “I want my work to be very elaborate so that people know it is mine,” he adds. The collection will be launched in the first week of April and is priced between Rs3,500 and Rs4,300.

Another interesting addition to the lawn season this year is Indian fashion designer J J Valaya. A founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India, Valaya has over 20 years of experience and is known as a fashion czar and trendsetter in India; he is now ready to introduce his first ever signature collection of lawn in Pakistan in association with textile giant, Five Star Textiles.

“Creativity, like music, is known to have a single universal language — one that does not identify with diverse communities as it simply creates one of its own,” Valaya tells us via email. “As we complete two decades of J J Valaya, what better celebration could there be than the creation of a collection that upholds this singular belief in creativity?”

He believes lawn is a characteristic product of the Pakistani textile industry and has always been an avid admirer of it. “I feel lawn is a friendly, versatile yet rich fabric and therefore, when we were approached by Five Star to design a signature collection, we took little time in agreeing and conceptualising our ideas,” he adds. “The journey since then has been fascinating — from research to ideation, development to finally styling the collection into one cohesive expression of style.” He hopes this exhilarating experience is the beginning of a long and creatively endowed association.

Known for her traditional bridals and ethnic clothing line, Nida Azwer will be going solo this season — no assistance of a textile company. “It’s a huge risk to go into production myself, but I am very excited as I have put a lot of hard work in my collection,” says Azwer. She has constructed the fabric herself and is trying to keep it a little different from the conventional look; she is using minimal embellishments and there will be no mixing of lawn and silk.

“The prints are very Nida Azwer and they speak for themselves so I don’t want to add extra embellishments — that would overwhelm the outfit,” she continues. Her limited edition collection, which launches in March, will be a one-off exhibition and will not go into reproduction.

Bollywood actor Sophie Choudry was spotted at the Race 2 screening in Mumbai, wearing this ultimately sassy outfit! From her chic powder yellow jacket to her bright lips, this fashionista looks superb. Here’s how to mimic her look.

Hair

Sophie left her hair straight and to the side. It looks a little flat, which could have been prevented had she spruced up that crown with some hair spray. Straighten your hair, twist and let it hang over your shoulder to get this look.

Make-up

7

She’s got rosy cheeks and defined eyes with the added touch of some spectacular lippy. We recommend using Mac Dish It Up lip stick (Rs1,700), Mac Posey blush (Rs2,700), Color Studio’s Pro Dip eyeliner (Rs600) and Body Shop illuminiser on your cheek bones (Rs2,000).

Accessories

8

With a single ring on her forefinger, Sophie could have worn a funky chunky necklace to complement her look further. For a bag like this, check out stores at Glass Towers (Rs600).

Outfit

1

The powder yellow jacket is a trend setter! Pair up some faux leather skinnies with a graphic T-shirt, available at Mantra (Rs2,000) and look for a powder yellow jacket at stores like Debenhams, Next or Bonanza (prices may vary on design). Try Zainab Market or Sunday Bazaar for something easy on the pocket.

Shoes

3

Strappy black peep toes are a must-have! For a pair of your own check out stores like Charles and Keith or Vincci (Rs4,000).

Actors Aditi Rao Hydari and Sara Loren were spotted at the screening of Murder 3 in Mumbai. Sara Loren — previously known as Mona Lizza — seems to be making waves in B-town with her upcoming performance in the romantic thriller. Wearing similar outfits, these divas are dressed to kill.

Sara Loren

Actor Sara Loren charms the audience with her sexy look as she dons a classy outfit at the screening of her upcoming movie.

Hair & Make-up

Her hair falls over her shoulder beautifully in soft curls; we love the shine and the fact that it’s not too flat. Sara’s make-up is gorgeous; her full lined pout with her flawless skin and kohl-lined eyes are perfect.

Clothes

A chiffon polka dotted black top pair with a black mini skirt complemented by a patent leather waist belt is supremely elegant. Loving the polka dots even though they are yesterday’s trend.

Accessories & Shoes

Some accessories would have been nice, maybe a pearl necklace and some pearl bracelets? The shoes are smart and seem comfortable.

Aditi Rao

Actor Aditi Rao takes the cake with her super chic combinations.

Hair & Make-up

Her lifted crown and crushed curled hair look is a winner. She’s used the perfect amount of make-up on her eyes to make them stand out. Her features look fresh and soft.

Clothes

A navy blue pencil skirt paired with a white chiffon top is on our mimic list! Navy blue seems to be the colour this season, good choice Aditi!

Accessories & Shoes

Dangling earrings and a statement watch are nice, but some bracelets would have complemented her look better. The beige peep toes are a fabulous touch to her over all look.

Trend file with Secret Closet: 5 Micro Trends We Love

$

Today we’d like to talk about mini trends or the little guys as we like to call them, as they work subtly behind the scenes to enhance and add that extra oomph factor that takes a design from ordinary to extraordinary. Sometimes they involve minute tweaks such as an aptly placed belt or a button while others are especially worth mentioning.

Tassels

These are at the top of our list of eastern mini trends. They are fun, playful and can be dressed up with shiny beads; crystals and gold thread for a more traditional and formal appeal such as on an Indian style Angarkha, a particular specialty of Nida Azwer’s staggering bridals and luxury formals. She often adds them on the upper sleeves as well for an enhanced effect; however one can add them almost anywhere. Farah Talib Aziz has innovatively used them on high side slits as a tool to merge two tone layers in her magnificent wedding formals. They look gorgeous on deep round backs as well! The fusion couture wizard Maheen Karim shows us how to embed tassels into cocktail wear using oriental red ones to ornament a white silk drape dress.

Fringe Benefits

In the same family but having its own distinct style identity is the fringe. It is an especially great way to play with trick lengths and uneven hemlines and is a signature mark of Shehla Chatoor’s uniquely creative luxury fusion prêt wear. A great alternative to borders for adding a splash of color as well as giving off a fresh younger vibe, Shehla Chatoor and Sania Maskatiya both love this micro trend and works wonders with it.

Lace Sleeves

Judging by the Chanel and Elie Saab Spring Couture lines shown at Paris this week, lace will play a significant role in 2013 and we are particularly struck by the aspect of lace sleeves. Ever since we saw Priyanka Chopra in a Ritu Kumar sari with the finest baroque lace sleeves we were smitten. The reason for the added charm being that the true beauty of the fabric is unleashed in its sheer form and is partially lost when it is thickened with lining. Elegant samples of the style can be found in the gentle works of Maheen Karim, Farah Talib Aziz, Farida Hasan, and Nida Azwer to name a few.

A crush on You

Crushing fabrics is a classic mini trend and more recently we have been intrigued by wide-legged crushed pants. The relaxed fall enables a calmness of style that works with everyday neutrals or to accompany embellished sherwani style coats as demonstrated by the strong balanced aesthetics of Sara Shahid of Sublime Couture.

Script Tease

A not so micro trend is the art of calligraphic print. A trend inspired by the high street pop, fusion prêt of Gulabo by Maheen Khan, took a sharp turn toward luxury prêt when the House of Sania Maskatiya decided to incorporate it into a finer version of itself with their animated Lokum Collection painted with artistic Turkish motifs and mystic strokes of calligraphy. While script printing is a trend in itself we love the Maskatiya touch of embedding it asymmetrically into their signature silk palazzo pants in particular.

Genero diamond jewellery comes to town

LAHORE:

With an underlying philosophy of a place ‘where dreams come true’, January 31 saw the launch of a one-of-a-kind jewellery store in Lahore; Damas Investments announced the arrival of Genero, a brand that hosts a wide variety of jewellery lines under its umbrella.

“The jewellery is designed and crafted by some of the finest craftsmen, of which the most popular is dedicated towards teenagers and children,” said the spokesperson for Damas Investments.

The opulent launch of the store was managed by J&S Entertainment and Event Management. They converted the entire parking lot into this romantic over-the-top expensive looking lounge space that was later used by Rachel Viccaji to keep the guests entertained. “This is the season of romance and extravagance and that’s why we have gone with a fully red opulent decor,” explains Jalal Salahuddin of J&S.

The two-floored store comprises of two sections catering to different markets. The starkly white ground floor houses the Jungle, Bihi and Generic collections, where the first two have been created for teenagers.”It is our specialty to cater to a younger market,” said Taimoor Choudhry of Damas Investments. “Every girl should be able to pick out a small piece for herself and that’s why we have a full range dedicated to that.”

The upper deck of the store transports you to a totally different realm; and while the ground floor tries to give a girly, young, Cinderella type of feel, the brightness of the white light was overwhelming. To a certain extent the interior takes you away from the jewellery and ends up overpowering it. The interior of the upper deck totally changes the feel of the store. With the feel of a lush billiard room-cum-parlour, this section houses the Museum collection that caters to an affluent market.

Genero01-PHOTO-SANA BHATTI

“We have window displays that will keep changing as the seasons and the mood of the store changes,” said Hamza Tarar, the interior decorator of the flagship store.”It has to be youthful since the prices are starting at Rs10,000. The affordability of the product is attractive and eye catching.” While he talks about the jewellery bar he has created on the ground floor, Tarar mentions how the second floor has been decorated in collaboration with the Graff store.

The launch was filled with personalities from the fashion world enjoying snacks and light conversations. “This is opulence at its best,” said Designer Ali Xeeshan. “I absolutely love the jewellery however, it would’ve been better if there had been warmer light to give the added luxurious feel.”

“Glitz and Glam can never go wrong; I am loving the ‘90s vibe going on here,” said Hassan Sheheryar Yasin. “Starting at Rs10,000 Genero is really making dreams come true.”

Damas Investments has taken great care in establishing their market and ensuring that their store has something for everybody. “It is all about accessible jewellery now and this is the place to be,” said Taimoor Choudhry. Advertising a new experience, Genero is a must visit in Lahore.

MBA grad turns fashion designer for Black&White

KARACHI: New clothing line Black&White is the brainchild of Nabeela Fatima, a 28-year-old Lums graduate. Her passion for fashion resulted into three diversified collections at her store; Kurtaan, offering only kurtas; Chic, offering semi-formal wear, and Dusk, which is a complete formal line.

Fatima feels that apart from an education in fashion and textile design, a designer must have good aesthetic sense. “I have a team of designers who manage my brand,” she said. “Two are from the Asian Institute of Fashion Design and one is from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. So yes, a degree is a must, but one must also have a designing sense.”

On Wednesday evening, at Dolmen Mall Tariq Road, Black&White opened its doors with a small fashion presentation. At the event, Fatima talked about her affinity with fashion. “For me, fashion is creativity, it is in-built. It’s not just about business, for me it is all about passion.”

With a small fountain in the centre of the store and dark wooden flooring, the vibe of Black&White was pleasant and soothing. While her collection has a wide-ranging colour palette, Fatima explained her love for black and white. “The great philosophy of colours relies on these two colours,” she said. “I believe many colours begin from black and white. Pairing them together is just heavenly.”

She has priced her three lines differently, with Kurtaan at Rs3,000 to Rs5,800; Chic at Rs6,000 to Rs12,000 and Dusk at Rs14,000 to Rs22,000.

“We are catering to a different set of people,” she said. “If we are offering Eastern embroidery on the clothes, we also have Western cuts on the same shirt. It’s highly experimental, but I hope people will like it.”

The young entrepreneur hopes to expand to Dolmen City Mall, Clifton and Zamzama in the next six months and then move towards Islamabad and Lahore.

At the event, fashion designer Tayyab Bombal made an interesting observation: “Many stores have lost their appeal, intrinsically because of the fact that the new designers are copy-cats per se, and shamelessly copy the designs of other giants present in the market. It is very sad indeed.”

These brilliant actors was seen posing at the 65th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards at the Grand Ballroom in California, looking spectacular in their dresses and gowns. Here is a round-up of the best looks of the night:

Berenice Bejo

Actor Bejo arrived at the event in style, wearing a black and bronze Louis Vuitton dress. The retro-inspired collar and dropped waist perhaps inspired her side-swept pin waves, but it all translated as but muddled. With an on trend matte red-lip and matching manicure she failed to bring anything new to her look. Yawn.

Famke Janssen

Famke made her way onto the red carpet in a bold ‘70s red John Galliano gown. The X-Men star looked delicious with pin straight her and rosy apple cheeks. It seems like that these ladies coordinated their decision to boycott some bling!

Jennifer Garner

Making her way to the event in an elegant white hot Barardi dress was actor Jennifer Garner. She remembered to accessorise which is a plus, but she could have done managed a better hair do then that one! Her Cartier jewellery and Ferragamo shoes and bag completed her look.

Anne Hathaway

Actor Anne Hathaway waved for the cameras in a gorgeous purple-toned ethnic print Valentino dress. She looks beautiful in that pixie cut but we really wish that she had worn some accessories. Earrings, a necklace — anything!

Helen Hunt

Rocking the red carpet in an off shoulder black Talbot Runhof spring 2013 floor length gown, was actor Helen Hunt. Nude lips and side swept curls completed her look, but again, no points for the lack of jewellery.

Labels moves a step ahead in global retailing

KARACHI:

On Saturday afternoon, the courtyard at Café Flo was abuzz with activity; models, designers and enthusiasts connected with the fashion industry were hosted for hi-tea by Zahir Rahimtoola of Labels and Sultana Siddiqui of Hum Network. The event celebrated a small step taken by two giants of our fashion and entertainment industry’s, but a big leap for Pakistani fashion at a global level.

With the launch of www.style360labels.com, previously labelsestore, the two have partnered to bring fashion to lovers of Pakistani fashion in and out of Pakistan. By running a ticker about the e-store on Hum Network of dramas, the two will ensure that viewers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia will be aware of Pakistani retailing online.

Rahimtoola spoke of the partnership with Hum Network, as well as its support in bringing business to Labels. “Forty per cent of Labels’ business comes from Hum Network; which has been a pro-active partner in circulating Mahira Khan’s Feeha Jamshed outfits in Humsafar and Sania Maskatiya creations later in Shehr-e-Zaat.” He said that Mahira’s vast fan following has resulted in his team receiving a flurry of emails requesting outfits worn by her on the shows.

Siddiqui, president of Hum Network which operates Style360 said, “Whenever I do business ventures, I often think of women’s empowerment. For me, Humsafar is a success story unto itself. We know people from Bollywood like Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan, but here Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan have gained popularity at a global level.”

Fashion Council Pakistan chair-person Shamaeel Ansari said, “This collaboration is yet another opportunity to move in the right direction. It’s a great milestone. From March onwards, all collections of the Fashion Pakistan Week designers will be at this e-store, available for everyone to buy.”

Zeba Husain of The House of Ensemble said, “It’s a great idea. It will be a plus point for designers to move to places they can’t go on their own.”

(M)ad men in the world of lawn

$
0
0

LAHORE: Who says that women are the only ones crazy about lawn? We have reason to believe that men cooped up in offices are in fact crazier about the product! It is their obsession that in turn feeds the obsession of lawn addicts that are drawn to exhibitions all The Express Tribune talks to a few market players to see how advertising works for lawnover the country.

Given that lawn is a product that sells itself — being the most purchased material in the country — one would think that lawn manufacturers don’t need to bring in the likes of Sonam and Karishma Kapoor for endorsements. But in the face of fierce competition with about a hundred participants in the lawn race, advertising agencies are constantly on edge about standing out and one upping the competition.

Just like women brag about latest fashion acquisitions, men about cars, watches and business deals, lawn manufacturers boast their campaigns with larger than life billboards dotted across the city. One can almost imagine them muttering “I’m bringing Aaminah Sheikh, what have you got?” to themselves, as they cash in on the borderline obsessive compulsive disorder women have developed for lawn.

With news of about Bollywood actors Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Karisma Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri being brought into the lawn ad war this year, The Express Tribune spoke to a few market players to see how advertising works for lawn.

“Advertising works purely on the consensus of the entire team,” says Amir Ahsan of Hussain Mills Limited. “We are bringing in Nargis Fakhri this year purely to raise the value of the brand. Elan has a very elite clientele and our model has to portray the same lifestyle we want our clients to have.”

Faraz Manan from Crescent Lawn, whose lawn is being modeled by Karisma, explains how the campaigns reflect the intent of the brand. “A few brands use them as sales gimmicks, while others use them more tastefully. Our concern is not to get a one-time sale, but to build a long lasting relationship with our fans and consumers. High end super models aren’t a way to get sales. Rather, we see them as people who are the best at what they do, endorsing us because we are the best at what we do,” he says. “We use high end celebs to reinforce our brand equity, and that in the long run, enhances our brand equity and consequently sales.”

Sapphire Group working with Sania Maskatiya this year takes a slightly different take on the matter. “We chose Sana Sarfaraz; actor, model and aspiring humanitarian. This young lady also possesses an admirable professional drive. Determined to pursue a Masters degree in NGO Management, not only does she embody the relaxed elegance of our lawn physically, but an inspirational charisma which both Sapphire and Sania Maskatiya deeply respect as well. We feel she adds prestige to our lawn. Having said that, there is no substitute for the fine quality of designs, fabrics and embellishments; without these, no celebrity or model’s endorsement would be incomplete or adequate,” says Nabeel Abdullah, director of the Sapphire Group.

‘Brace yourself… Asim Jofa billboards are back!’

This was just one of the many Twitter posts on Asim Jofa’s lawn billboards. As always, his campaign has got tongues wagging. Phrases such as “My love does cost a thing”, “A woman is a diamond’s best friend” and “I am nature’s miracle” call out to the senses, as they loom on billboards in Karachi against beautiful hues and ethereal figures.

Muzaffar Manghi, the General Manager at Red Communications and the force behind the latest campaign, talks about the brand’s objective. “We are not trying to sell lawn,” he says. “We are trying to sell a brand. If Aston Martin comes out and sells a doodh ka dabba, people will buy it [because of the brand].”

Referring to Jofa’s flamboyant billboards, Manghi says that the curiosity is what gets people to check out the jora. “Last year, even during a hartaal women came and shopped,” he boasted, adding, “I want to create a scenario whereby if Asim comes up with a $1,000 dollar lipstick, it will sell.”

Manghi describes the trend of using Bollywood faces in Pakistani lawn campaigns as a “different way to approach the same problem”, but feels there is a down side. “Deepika’s face is bigger than the brand she’s representing. So it may be known as ‘Deepika wali lawn’; women will buy it, but should they be buying the face or the brand?” he asks.

At the end, he adds that these billboards are created to generate a buzz about Asim Jofa lawn, and that catalogues and campaigns with pretty models wearing lawn prints will follow.

“Ultimately, it boils down to ‘Is my Deepika prettier than your Priyanka?’; all lawn ads have pretty, tall women wearing a lawn jora — Asim Jofa just does a little more before that.”

This or that? Kajol's magical transformation

$

Actor Kajol was spotted looking like Morticia Addams at Dabboo Ratnani’s 2013 Calendar launch. Her outfit was a total eye sore.

However, at Asha Bhosle’s acting debut MAI she walked in wearing a breathtakingly beautiful sari and looked fabulous. We wonder what brought on the transformation — possibly the use of a better trainer and stylist?

This

Hair & Maku-up

Boring hair never looked this bad; some effort was much needed. She went for natural make-up which did not help her already blah look.

Clothes

We are trying to figure out whether that is a long skirt paired with a top, waist belt and that loud pink scarf or if it’s all one piece mess? It’s disastrous either way — she should not bother with that outfit ever again.

Accessories & Shoes

Too much cover for comfort. Forget the accessories, we can’t even see the shoes!

that?

Hair & Make-up

Kajol was wowed us with this look. Her hair is in a neat up-do, with just the right amount of volume on her crown. Kajol is always the diva and never the drama queen when it comes to her make-up. Soft lips and natural cheeks look good.

Clothes

That sari has us turning green with envy! Kajol’s definitely sporting the figure for this gorgeous net sari!

Accessories & Shoes

Her bangles and clutch complete her already ethereal look. We’ve got an eye out for this babe at upcoming events.

Big dreams in a small world, Kuki Concepts

KARACHI:

For Zahid Khan of Kuki Concepts, fashion is the statement an individual makes, but is reserved for the rich. “It’s not meant for poor people. It’s for the elite and the high class,” he says. “It is everything to me. Raat ko sotay hoay bhi, I dream of kapray… I think about clothes all the time.”

That’s what drives Khan, the passion for clothes and his fascination with colour. He recalls how, in his early years, his mother would ask him to accompany her during her Sunday Bazaar trips, instead of his seven other brothers. “I was always so fascinated with colours and combinations, that my mother always took me to the market to get good, colourful fabric whenever the festive season approached,” he says with a smile.

After graduating from the National College of Arts (NCA) with a degree in graphic design in 2001, Khan sold his thesis for Rs75,000 to a big textile firm, by doing a textile-inspired project for them. The following year, he opened his very first outlet Kuki Fuki with a friend at a rented space which was a designer club frequented by Lahoris. He called the place Kuki-Fuki. After realising that he can do so much more with his name and brand, he launched his own label, Kuki Concepts, on MM Alam Road. Thus, Khan went from a small designer to one that participates in fashion weeks and lawn exhibitions. From bridal couture and prêt wear to interior designing and furnishing, Khan does it all. “I don’t take orders for 500 bridal joras and then cry my heart out when I can’t complete these joras on time!” he exclaims, when asked how he juggles it all.

In 2012, he showcased at six events and received lots of appreciation from Karachi. So how does a Lahore-based designer succeed at events in Karachi to an extent that he participates at every Fashion Pakistan Week, but is never part of the famous PFDC? He says, “I am better friends with the Karachi crowd. I personally like the work and the simplicity of Maheen Khan, Rizwan Beyg’s couture, Faiza Samee’s colour palette, Bunto Apa’s striking bridal collection. The Karachi crowd and market has been appreciative from the very beginning, that’s why I am part of it.” The concept of two councils makes no sense to him, as he says, “At some point, I wish they’d become one. Why the division? I just want them to be one and work for the progress of the country on a single unified platform.”

Speaking about the hardships he has faced in his career, Khan says, “Establishing my name was really difficult — leg pulling, politics, setting up a factory and then these workers and tailors made my life very difficult as well at the beginning.” He is grateful that things have now become a lot more organised.

Kuki Concepts plans to go international with its designs — an outlet in London. Khan secretly hopes he could dress Madonna and Lady Gaga as well.

Fashion Police: The devil wears harem pants

$

Famed Bollywood vocalist Sunidhi Chauhan might have exceptional talent with her vocals, but she really needs a stylist. That outfit is disastrous! We are not entirely sure who advised her to wear this outfit to the launch party of Krishika Lulla’s Enigma at JW Marriott, but it’s definitely not flattering.

The Charge Sheet

Hair

Although neat, Sunidhi’s hair looks totally flat. A blow-dry might have saved her from being a fashion disaster, but we can’t really blame her, especially when her ensemble looks like it was put together at the last-minute.

Outfit

We understand that harem pants are in, but that does not mean that you pair it with a badly-fitted shrug and a completely mismatched graphic tee. Those bones on the shirt are cool but somehow just don’t work when paired like this.

Makeup

Sunidhi’s washed-out face is probably her only saving grace. After the abominable getup, the minimal make-up with red lips and liner are refreshing. Those bushy brows, however, are disappointing and almost overshadow her neat eyeliner.

Accessories

It’s alright to keep it subtle some times; her outfit would have been too muddled had she worn more accessories. Her chunky hoop earrings are overshadowed by her untied (read: unexciting) locks. She probably tried making up for her subtlety by sporting a textured crimson handbag — wish she had decided to leave it at home!

Shoes

You better spare yourself the horror by keeping your eyes off her shoes. With those voluminous, multi-layered harem pants, she seems to be balancing her existence on those out-of-place, pointed pumps.

Jennifer Lopez

f4

Singer Jennifer Lopez looks like a million dollars. She has paired harem pants with high-heeled boots.

Her sleeveless leather top complements her boots well, and she’s rocking the chunky bracelets and rings. Also, we’re totally in love with her nail polish.

Kimora Lee Simmons

f3

American model Kimora Lee Simmons has the right answer for Sunidhi’s handbag and shoe disaster.

She sported this striking red handbag and worked up those pointed pumps, with her spectacular outfit.

Ciara

f2

Singer Ciara wore grey harem pants with a black boyfriend blazer and fitted black tee with style.

Sunidhi could take a cue from the R&B sensation. She looks uber cool with that high pony-tail and red snake skin printed sash.

Round-up: Yay or Nay

These Hollywood beauties graced the red carpet at the 85th Annual Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Monday. Here’s a round-up of these stunning ladies and their spectacular outfits — can’t wait for what they’ll wear on awards night!

Amy Adams

Walking the red carpet for her nomination for Actress in a Supporting Role, Actor Amy Adams looked feminine and graceful in a J Mendel Spring 2013 floral-print violet frock. Her million dollar smile complemented well with her curly auburn hair, tucked on the side. However, the nude pumps she wore to the luncheon looked more chunky than feminine.

Anne Hathaway

Actor Anne Hathaway made an appearance on the red carpet in black attire from head-to-toe. Hathaway, who is nominated for Actress in a Supporting Role as Fantine in Les Miserables, wore a sleek black Resort 2013 dress with a flowing ruffle back. The 30-year-old worked black sandals with her outfit and wore yellow-gold and pavé diamond stud earrings designed by Jamie Wolf. Bracelets and rings by Jennifer Meyer. A pink lipstick completed her less-is-more look.

Naomi Watts

Strutting down the red carpet, The Impossible actor Naomi Watts was dressed in a graceful, black Valentino dress. We totally love her loose, blonde locks, which she swept sideways. Topping off her look, she sported dazzling pink lipstick. Keeping her ensemble simple, she wore nude Paulina pumps.

Helen Hunt

Actor Helen Hunt, nominated for her performance in The Sessions, looked gorgeous in a knee-length Dolce & Gabbana dress. The ruffled dress with a square neckline looked as graceful as Helen usually does. Her classy and elegant outfit was paired with minimal earrings and a bangle. Unfortunately, the strappy Jimmy Choo sandals did not do justice to the dress. Hunt looked radiant, thanks to the subtle and natural make-up she wore.

Jennifer Lawrence

Actor Jennifer Lawrence, nominated for Silver Linings Playbook, looked absolutely elegant in her white Chloé Spring 2013 dress. Among the dark colours and floral prints at the event, the 22-year-old’s outfit was as breath of fresh air. In a strapless, embossed dress, Lawrence had the red carpet sizzling with her nude lips, smokey eyes and half-tied hair.

Jessica Chastain

Competing with Lawrence for Actress in a Leading Role for her movie Zero Dark Thirty, actor Jessica Chastain wore a black Erdem Report outfit with lace sleeves and bright pink and bluish-grey floral embroidery. Matching the petals on her dress, Chastain worked a pink lip and let her red locks loose to pull off this uber chic look. To finish off the look, Chastain wore nude Christian Louboutin pointed pumps — we love ‘em!

Get The Look: A picture of elegance

Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor looked stunning at the launch of Rochelle Pinto’s book The Style Diary of a Bollywood Diva in the Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai on Wednesday.

Make-up

f3

If you have not invested in a bright lip colour yet, be sure to get your hands on Mac’s Lady Danger (Rs1,700). This famous red/orange pout has been flaunted at red carpets everywhere. Line your eyes with Color Studio Pro Dip eyeliner (Rs600) and highlight your cheek bones with some Body Shop bronzer (Rs2,000).

Hair

Her long lovely locks fell straight behind her shoulders, looking shiny as ever. To achieve a similar look, rub the ends of your hair with some anti-frizz serum — we recommend using Garnier’s Anti Frizz Serum (Rs300); the small bottle will last you forever since you only have to use a drop! Iron your hair and spray on some Pantene Heat Protection Shine Spray (Rs600)

f1

Accessories

We don’t see Bebo wearing too many accessories, with the exception of her massive wedding ring and favourite coral ring that she wears everywhere. It’s best to keep the accessories understated with this one, considering the belt is a statement on its own.

Outfit

f4

Pair up a black knee length long sleeved dress with a fashionable dull gold belt. This outfit screams elegance and class. Look for a fashionable belt at stores like Splash or rummage through the racks at your local vintage market, Sunday Bazaar. For a similar dress, check out Wardrobe (Rs1,000)

Shoes

f2

Patent leather is in style and Bebo is rocking black wedge peep toes with her killer look.

Maliha Shaikh showcases third jewellery collection

KARACHI:

Jewellery designer Maliha Shaikh showcased her collection of semi-precious jewels at her DHA residence on Thursday morning. This is her third exhibition since she launched her brand three months ago.

Shaikh exhibited 54 pieces of jewellery with raw semi-precious stones like turquoise, tourmaline and jade, encrusted in gold-plated silver chunky lockets, dangling earrings and buttons — each being a statement piece. The stones are purchased mainly from vendors in Pakistan, India and China, with the jewellery being priced between Rs20,000 to Rs45,000. “The stones have not been treated at all to maintain their natural beauty, which is why they stand out and add an antique streak to the pieces,” said the designer.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Shaikh said that having lived in the United States for the past eight years, she draws inspiration from renowned brands like Tiffany & Co and Cartier. “Many people in Pakistan do not have access to collections of such big brands and I wanted to make exclusive pieces at affordable prices,” she said.

“I always wanted to wear different, exclusive pieces which describe my personality,” she added. “Hence, the idea was to create something exclusive for every woman. This jewellery is meant for people who choose not to wear expensive gold pieces and prefer wearing gold-plated pendants, instead of artificial ones.”

She said that she tries to keep prices as affordable as possible for “someone who is confident enough to wear these pieces”.

Shaikh plans to hold an exhibition in the Middle East next, for clients who are interested in statement jewellery pieces.
